Nevertheless, on the one hand, comparatively little criminological and forensic research in the German-speaking area has focused on the phenomenon. International research, on the other hand, provides insights into risk factors, motivation and characteristics of knife crime. This paper aims to contribute to the study of these factors in a national context. For this purpose, results of an empirical analysis of data on knife crime in Rhineland-Palatinate are reported. Based on a survey conducted by the Ministry of Justice of Rhineland-Palatinate, verdicts of a total of 452 persons convicted of serious violent offenses were evaluated. The two subgroups of knife crime and serious violent crime without the use of knives were examined for correlations with respect to demographic characteristics, violence-related and mental health-related variables. The results show that the two subgroups are predominantly similar in terms of demographic characteristics but differ in the areas of violence and mental health. In particular, associations were found between knife crime and personal experiences of victimization, the specific use of violence in the social environment, prior psychological distress and alcohol abuse.
