@greenfediverse what is really interesting about #datacenter #co2 emissions is what they call "scope 3" emissions: the emissions of the supply chain. So we need more of:
- usage of #refurbished and long lasting hardware (-> @monocles )
- procurement of "fairphone-like hardware"
- #cradle2cradle / reused datacenter buildings
I tried to reflect this in following draft of a list:
https://lite.framacalc.org/green-webhost-ranking.html
For the second point (hardware procurement), only #hostsharing was mentioning this in their sustainability report, where they preferred hardware vendors with a good #CSR rating by Oekom. E.g. HP is one of those vendors, already trying to make their supply chain more transparent, but there is lot of room for improvement compared to what #fairphone is able to do in the IT market!
#fairphone made a great report about those "scope3 emissions":

Most of the GWP (Global Warming Potential) is caused by the production of the phone itself. As one could imagine, the most #co2 intensive part is the mainboard. I would be interested to see such numbers for a datacenter. I guess there are a LOT of mainboards...
