The German Army chose not to install the cover on the mechanics of their H135 training . I asked: yes, this is the normal flight configuration.

@hopfgeist feels fragile to a layman like me, but I guess they have their reasons @chrismarquardt

@chrismarquardt I think the reason was easier access. The H135 is not only used for flight training but also for instructing the mechanics, and that would require constant removal and re-installation, so (with approval from Airbus Helicopters) they chose not to have this part. The main purposes of the cover are aesthetics and protection from dust and dirt. Nobody should normally get this close anyway. Shortly after I took the picture, they cordoned off access to the tail.
