Ruth_Mottram - Good morning! Quick reminder that you can see the current state of the #Arctic #SeaIce on @polarportal where you can also see how the # Greenland Ice Sheet mass budget from GRACE and the daily surface mass budget from @dmidk  Some big improvements + new data coming soon too

MastodonOSI SAF (@osi_saf@mastodon.social)To learn more, you can check our Sea Ice Index: https://osisaf-hl.met.no/v2p2-sea-ice-index or the Cryo Index powered by our team at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute: https://cryo.met.no/en/sea-ice-index-daily

On the other side of the globe, #Antarctic sea ice is beginning to rapidly expand as austral winter approaches. Last month observed quite a bit of regional variability in this area too, though it was generally below the 1981-2010 mean.

We tracked a krill super trawler deep into #Antarctic waters and caught something on camera they would have rather kept hidden from the world.

It reveals how industrial fishing can continue non-stop in one of the most remote and fragile places on Earth - endangering a vital ecosystem that should be protected.

Protest March of the Penguins
youtube.com/watch?v=Xlik9QF08q

"Trump slapped 10 per cent tariffs on an Australian territory with no human inhabitants: the Heard and McDonald Islands, home to #penguins and seals. In response, nonprofit Penguins International will livestream the #Antarctic penguins’ annual #migration from the ocean to their breeding grounds, calling the event the ‘Protest March of the Penguins.”"

This is a story of a separation that lasted a year, with #Antarctic icebergs and airstrikes lying between them.

40 years ago today RRS Discovery III arrived at Montevideo, marking the end of my first #Antarctic and Southern Ocean research cruise. The ship had been my home for four and a half months, since 23rd November. Part of me wanted to head home, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to explore some of the sights of South America, so my adventure continued.

Here, using an Earth system model with interactive Antarctic ice-shelf cavities, we show that regional hydrography and topography determine a cavity tipping point. The Filchner–Ronne ice-shelf cavity will encounter such a tipping point with abrupt warm-water intrusion, rapid basal melt increase and massive freshwater release in response to increasing CO2 levels within this century. Conversely, the Ross Ice Shelf shows a more gradual response

NatureRegional conditions determine thresholds of accelerated Antarctic basal melt in climate projection - Nature Climate ChangeMelting from below is crucial for the future evolution of Antarctic ice shelves. Here the authors use an Earth system model with explicit simulations of ice-shelf cavities to show how regional hydrography and topography determine when an ice shelf will undergo rapid melting.
