Since #Trump returned to office, the #Pentagon has launched an investigation into #leaks that resulted in 3 ofcls being placed on leave [#Signalgate].

It has also required legacy media organizations, including the #NewYorkTimes, the #WashingtonPost, #CNN & #NBCNews, to vacate their Pentagon office spaces in a new *rotation system* that brought in others, including outlets generally friendly to the Trump admin such as the #NewYorkPost, #Breitbart, the #DailyCaller & #OANN.

The #Trump admin notified 4 major #news orgs that they would have to give up their dedicated office space at the #Pentagon.

A Dept of #Defense spox said that The #NYT, #NBC News, #NPR & #Politico had to vacate their offices by Feb 14.

Murdoch’s #NewYorkPost will replace The NYT; #FarRight cable channel #OAN will be swapped in for #NBC News; #Breitbart News will be a radio outlet instead of NPR; & the news outlet #HuffPost, owned by BuzzFeed, will switch w/ Politico.

Since Mitt Romney’s loss in the 2012 election,
the Mercers have drifted ever further out of the orbit of Planet Koch,
building up their own entities, including #Breitbart #News,
#Cambridge #Analytica (the data startup),
and the ironically named #Government #Accountability #Institute,
all of them featuring #Steve #Bannon, the self-described economic nationalist, in top slots
—until he joined the White House.
Cambridge Analytica, on whose board Bannon served, and Breitbart, where he was the chief executive, are private companies.
#GAI, which produced the campaign-season book
"Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich", by Peter Schweizer,
is a nonprofit organization.
Schweizer’s book, together with an accompanying movie executive-produced by #Rebekah Mercer, was designed to sully the reputation of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
It was part of a Bannon-crafted strategy to steer the sort of smears that usually bubble up from the right-wing fever swamps directly into the mainstream media.
It worked; in 2015 the New York Times and the Washington Post both made exclusive agreements with the GAI to report on advance excerpts of Clinton Cash.

#Bannon was wealthy before he met up with the Mercers,
first through his work as a banker for Goldman Sachs back when it was a privately held company,
and then through his own privately held ventures in movie-making and consulting.
Though Bannon’s wealth, when compared to that of Betsy DeVos, makes him a pipsqueak in the Trump money universe
(assets worth between $12 million and $54 million, according to the New York Times),
it nonetheless derives primarily from privately held entities.

On Sept 27, Donald Trump Jr. exposed the employee’s name & photograph to millions of people on social media, writing, “Maybe it’s time for the #GOP to end #Deloitte’s taxpayer funded gravy train?” Others — including #JDVance’s chief spox & a #Republican senator — circulated Trump Jr.’s comments, & the *#conservative* website #Breitbart published a story naming the man & highlighting his job.

Deloitte receives ~$3B annually from federal agencies including the HHS & DOD.

Roughly everyone in America has heard some version of the Burisma/Biden backstory.

But briefly: in March of 2016 then-Vice President Joe Biden delivered a blustering speech in which he threatened to withhold foreign aid from Ukraine if that country didn’t fire its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin.

Shokin, the so-called “Diamond Prosecutor,” was shockingly corrupt, and it was the consensus of the entire US government, along with our Western European allies and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), that Shokin had to go.

But that didn’t bother #Peter #Schweizer, a #Breitbart editor who ginned up the fake “#Uranium #One” smear of Hillary Clinton.

In 2017, he repurposed the lie for Joe Biden.
This time, the story was that Biden had gotten Shokin fired to protect Burisma, a company which employed Hunter Biden as a board member.

In reality, Shokin had let the investigation of Burisma go dormant by 2016.
But that didn’t stop Rudy Giuliani, then Donald Trump’s lawyer, from spending 2019 traipsing around Ukraine trying to prove that this fabrication was true
— or at least to find someone willing to say it was true so he could dirty up Biden and ensure his loss in 2020.

Unsurprisingly, Shokin was willing to play ball with Rudy as he tried to make fetch happen.
But so were a whole host of other Ukrainians, many of whom had ties to the Kremlin.
One of them was Andrii Derkach, a Ukrainian lawmaker, who was photographed showing Giuliani “evidence” in December 2019.
(Source: Derkach’s press office)

And here’s how Donald Trump’s own Treasury Department referred to Rudy’s buddy when it announced in September 2020 that it was sanctioning him for election interference:
🔸Derkach, a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, has been an active Russian agent for over a decade, maintaining close connections with the Russian Intelligence Services. Derkach has directly or indirectly engaged in, sponsored, concealed, or otherwise been complicit in foreign interference in an attempt to undermine the upcoming 2020 US presidential election. […]
🔸From at least late 2019 through mid-2020, Derkach waged a covert influence campaign centered on cultivating false and unsubstantiated narratives concerning US officials in the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election, spurring corruption investigations in both Ukraine and the United States designed to culminate prior to election day.

The announcement went on to note that “between May and July 2020, Derkach released edited audio tapes and other unsupported information with the intent to discredit US officials.”
And that is where #Smirnov comes in...

FYI: The #Breitbart article that #Trump's attorney insisted on discussing in court today, only cites a SINGLE SOURCE — a twitter user — whose bio is:

"Applying the 69th Amendment to the Internet!"

The user's feed is filled w/ posts & retweets vilifying Justice #Engoron’s #LawClerk much like the one that prompted Trump’s original #GagOrder.

Also, FYI, Engoron said also in court he never received a complaint. It seems to only exist on a website run by the user.

2) The story above 👆 makes the case for individual journalistic institutions to set up their own instances on #Mastodon. I suggested this on my #podcast linked below

Alternatively passionate individual journalists could set up their own instances if they wanted to, rather than be potentially bundled with creatures from #Breitbart on a giant journalist instance. That is not the only option

"Ten "superpolluter” publishers, among them Russian state media and right wing US news site, #Breitbart, are the source of 69% of interactions with #ClimateDenial content on Facebook. These "toxic ten" publish overt climate denial and amplifies it on #Facebook to "prevent consensus on facts and solutions," noted the report.

The ultimate solution would be to "demonetize" climate denial, she believes, something big tech companies have so far largely failed to do."

@annaleen no they did spin up fascism by giving the keys to their platforms to networks of opaque click scammers and info operators often backed by powerful special interests like Mercers/ #Bannon, #breitbart, #fox etc who “flooded the zone” astroturfing extremism and #conspiracy, stirring up ignorant #MAGA-t mobs. This method and channels proliferated. #Propaganda works. #disinformation works.
