Continued thread

Used the cheap but surprisingly effective portable wifi digital microscope to zoom in very close on the thick golden-yellow clematis threads to show that they appear to be made up of many 100s of smaller threads bundled together.

Took this photo outside with the microscope tipped sideways to get sunlight on the threads!

When we came home from vacation the end of last month, I was sad to see the clematis in the front flower bed that had a lot of flower buds when we left was dead. Later I found that only the old growth was dead but there were new growth coming up. Now the new growth has pushed out a flower with more coming up. Plants are so resilient. I love them.

This is Clematis "The First Lady".

Lol. I was wondering why the Clematis jackmanii that I planted last year didn't flower. Turns out I was supposed to cut it to the ground this past spring or last fall because it only flowers on new wood. You learn something new every day. I wonder if it's too late to prune it for me to get any blooms from it this year. 🤔

Photo is of Clematis "The Vagabond", a very prolific bloomer in my garden.

I had the idea to have three varieties of clematis of different colors to climb on the same garden obelisk last year. Sadly only two of them came back this year. The dark purple one is Clematis "The Vagabond" (not "Jackmanii" as previously thought) and the other one is Clematis "Vancouver Daybreak".
