As the #NIH slashes funding for research into #Alzheimer's, #cancer, #COVID & #diseases that inflict pain & suffering, I'm heartbroken & furious. #Early-onset Alzheimer's took my father away from me &, more importantly, himself. Why would anyone in their right mind (right, the mind of the #fascist is almost incomprehensible) do such a thing? If nothing else, a selfish viewpt. says this is idiocy. These cuts are meant to bring us to our knees. Let's resist (& sue them into oblivion).

"Just one of 13 Republicans on the Senate Medical Affairs Committee voted for Dr. Edward Simmer ‘s nomination to lead the new Department of Public Health — in contrast to the Republican-dominated Senate’s overwhelming endorsement of Simmer in 2021 as head of the state’s old public health and environmental agency."

“What we saw during COVID-19, which we still see at this moment, is a radicalization of this workforce — they have to fight not only for the public, but really to protect their very lives,” said Michelle Mahon, director of nursing practice for National Nurses United.

MobilizeHands Off! COVID Long-Haulers Fights Back · Hands Off**Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them.** We are fighting back! They're taking everything they can get their hands on—our health care, our data, our jobs, our services—and daring the world to stop them. This is a crisis, and the time to act is now. 🚨 **On Saturday, April 5th, we're taking to the streets to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!** 🚨 This mass mobilization day is our message to the world that we do not consent to the destruction of our government and our economy for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies. Alongside Americans across the country, we are marching, rallying, and protesting to demand a stop the chaos and build an opposition movement against the looting of our country. A core principle behind all Hands Off! events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. But we also need a space for people with disabilities to attend, a virtual gathering for people who can't participate in person. COVID Long-Haulers Against Fascism is a group of people with long COVID and their allies. If you would like to learn more, please email us at CLHAgainstFascism@gmail.com. Where @ethanz tells us about the cultural power of #DontLookUp:

"But there’s something Don’t Look Up gets right. Many of our #institutions are failing us. The experts don’t know what to do. The feelings of terror and helplessness lead people to behave strangely and unpredictably. McKay doesn’t offer us a solution to an ongoing #apocalypse, but this #film, at its best, offers us a moment of #empathy. Look past the machinations of the politicians and the media stars, and look towards the people in the background trying to make sense of a reality that no longer makes sense, disrupted by #COVID or #climatechange or by a slide into #authoritarianism. If there’s a solution to this polycrisis, this interconnected mess of apocalyptic threats, it’s in the #groups working to live through this scary moment, not through the politicians or celebrities who’ll get to escape to their bunkers or spaceships."

Ethan Zuckerman · Science on Screen: Don't Look Up - Ethan ZuckermanDon't Look Up anticipates the stupidity of our political moment, but misfires on the power of authenticity. Enjoy the apocalypse.

"The number one lesson that Donald Trump took from the pandemic on his watch is that it was bad for him politically. For him, utter ignorance was preferable to public information panic and preparedness. Kennedy is the mad bad tool implementing that lesson now in his powerful position running the nation's health agencies right into the ground."
