Is this a question they are seriously asking?
“The delivery man arrived with the ashes in a gift bag’ – why are so many people opting out of traditional funerals?”
I paid $64 to bury my mom, plus an urn that was less than $100 because I bought it from Amazon instead of the funeral home.
We had a graveside funeral for free too. The cemetery set up a podium and however many chairs we requested, then when we were done they came and filled in the holes & took the chairs away.
I had no idea until my mom died that if someone gets SNAP or SSI/SSDI or section 8 the state pays for the cremation. It wasn’t until my brother died that I realized we could get a free cemetery plot. So I chose two together (one for my mom and one for my brother) and each one can hold two people so I will be on my mom side and my dad ended up on my brother’s side.
The only thing I had to pay for was the interment fee ($64 for SNAP/Section 8/disability) and the stones. My brother’s friends raised the money for the headstone and then my dad and I split the costs of the footstones, and because we had them all done at once we got a discount.
I don’t know if all the states do this. All I know is that I’m so happy my mom didn’t try to pre-pay for any of this stuff. And now my youngest brother doesn’t have to worry about what to do with me when I die. He’ll just have to pay for them to dig the hole, my ashes will come in a box so he won’t even have to buy an urn if he doesn’t want to.
