Who protects our democracy from the security fanatics of the goverment?
We have to stop assuming governments don't understand #encryption because at some point, when ignorance becomes a pattern, it needs to be treated as malice. Especially when they make rules that explicitly exempt themselves, they know what they're doing is wrong and they do it anyways
In case you are falsely feeling protected outside of Europe:
Chat Control doesn't just concern Europeans. It concerns all of us.
These kind of regulations will come for all of us, everywhere, if we do not ALL push against it everywhere.
If you do not understand how this is all intertwined, I invite you to read more privacy news and in-depth analysis. Because we must all support each other's privacy fights.
Privacy is a human right

1. V2 Encryption: Mandatory E2EE & Audited Cryptography
#DeltaChat V2 enforces end-to-end encryption by default, eliminating legacy "unencrypted chat" risks. The Rust-based core uses rPGP (audited OpenPGP library) with Ed25519 (same as Signal) and post-quantum algorithms. ETH Zurich’s 2024 audit fixed 20 vulnerabilities in SecureJoin/Autocrypt protocols .
➤ Security benefit: Protection against MITM attacks via QR-based verification .

Oopsie! It's Signal Gate, the sequel. A random person was added to a law enforcement group chat that included officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In it, they discussed highly sensitive information about an active search for an individual seemingly marked for deportation. Here's more from @404mediaco

Bart Preneel on EU’s #chatcontrol proposal in GVA: Mass #surveillance is not the solution to child abuse. Detection technology has huge error rates - millions of Europeans could be wrongly flagged. Weakening #encryption is a dangerous path.

Fight Chat Control – Protect Digital Privacy in the EU: The EU (still) wants to scan your private messages and photos.
The "Chat Control" proposal would mandate scanning of all private digital communications, including encrypted messages and photos. This threatens fundamental privacy rights and digital security for all EU citizens.

EU #chatcontrol would scan all private images before #encryption. Bart Preneel warns in De Morgen it’s flawed, easy to evade, and will trigger millions of false positives, a dream for authoritarians.

MLS: The Naked King of End-to-End Encryption
The goal of this essay is to revisit the core problems that #MLS aims to solve, and consider whether it solves them well enough. And if it does not solve them well enough, then what areas it can be effectively applied to, and what are the alternatives to MLS.
What Problem Does MLS Aim to Solve?
The problem that the #cryptographers who designed MLS aimed to solve is end-to-end (E2E) #encryption in large groups. #E2E encryption, by definition, is a cryptographic solution that protects the content of the messages from the #communication providers.
A simple approach to E2E encryption in large groups would be for all members to agree on a shared key. But the problem of this approach is the cost of key updates. If the group is really large, then every time a member leaves, the remaining members must agree on a new key so that the member who left cannot decrypt the new #messages. With a simple approach the cost of agreeing on the group key grows linearly with the group size, and it does not scale well enough.
