"The digital sovereignty issue also raised its head during the Covid crisis, when governments wanted to use contact-tracing apps as a public health measure. It then became clear that they could only do so with the consent of Apple and Google".

Interestingly, while there is a lot of noise about "cloud", #eurostack etc. there is barely any discussion about mobile.

Yet from identity to payments and maps mobile is a gatekeeper to *everything*.

In Deutschland wie Europa ohrenbetäubende Debatte um Souveränität, Eurostack, freie Software.

Und im bevölkerungsreichsten Bundesland NRW scheint ein einzelnes Unternehmen in mäzenhaftem Gestus mehr und mehr direkt in Staatskanzlei und Schulministerium zu sitzen.

Of course #opensource is a great means to build trust. So at least in some parts of the so-called #eurostack this could be a driver that will in effect help catalyse a "software union".

But we all know the sustainability challenges of the open source paradigm. The challenge will be for any new business models (and associated monetary incentives etc.) to overcome instinctive nationalistic introversion and distrust, not-invented here syndromes etc.

I'm also on the side that building more infra to pair the USA is just the same imperial logic all over again and it is a disaster for our planet, but first, for the sacrifice zone regions. I was mentioning yesterday, while discussing with some people at #rp25 that EU needs to expropriate, not build more!

5 days until #EU_OS at Paris #HackDays: The architecture for EU OS must permit a migration phase in which both #Microsoft #Windows and EU OS run in parallel (hybrid setup). This way, organisations can do tests with only few of their staff (e.g. developers/engineers) while keeping everything as is for e.g. HR/business-critical functions. In principle, staffers may also have a Windows and an EU OS laptop at the same time. 1/2

Inital Setup (windows only): two windows latpop connect to AD
Hybrid Setup: Windows computers connect to AD and EU OS computers connect via FreeIPA to AD.
Final Setup with only EU OS computers all connected to FreeIPA
