African Heritage In Europe: Join a special screening of “Dahomey” and “If Objects Could Speak” on 24 July at 19:30, hosted by Kommunales Kino Freiburg (Urachstr. 40, 79102 Freiburg). The 1948-60 Malayan Emergency:

"The British attempted to starve the Malayan Nat'l Liberation Army (MNLA) using scorched earth policies through food rationing, killing livestock, and aerial spraying of the herbicide Agent Orange. The British engaged in extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians, in violation of the Geneva Conventions. The most infamous example is the Batang Kali massacre, which the press has referred to as "Britain's My Lai". The Briggs Plan forcibly relocated a million civilians into concentration camps. Many Orang Asli indigenous communities were also targeted for internment because the British believed that they were supporting the communists. The widespread decapitation of people suspected to have been guerrillas led to the 1952 British Malayan headhunting scandal."

Happy St Ealswitha's Day!

Ealswitha (or Elswith or Ealhswith) was Queen of Wessex as the wife of Alfred the Great. She was also the mother of a queen regnant (Aethelflaed of Mercia).

Described as the “true and dear lady of the English”, Ealswitha was sainted following her death.

One of her links to Somerset is spending part of 878 AD hiding at Athelney from the Vikings.

Dort sind antike Votivgaben ausgestellt. Kranke haben diese an der toskanischen Thermalquelle gestiftet. Die Quelle gibt es heute noch.
