Gorge #FloodAdaptation for Sea Level Rise #CommunityWorkshop By City of Victoria
Have your say on the future of the #GorgeWaterway and #PortageInlet.

Thursday, September 25 · 2 - 4pm PDT.
Doors at 1:45pm.
Esquimalt Gorge Park & Pavilion
1070 Tillicum Rd.

Join us at this workshop to learn more about sea level rise in the Gorge and Portage Inlet and to share your knowledge, experience and values to help guide #SeaLevelRise planning for the area. A presentation will be followed by a #facilitated discussion that will help inform adaptation options to address sea level rise.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

Introduction to the Gorge Coastal #Flood Adaptation Strategy.
Sea level rise projections, including areas, #ecosystems and #infrastructure at risk in the Gorge
Possible #coastal adaptation approaches
Examples of coastal resilience initiatives along the Gorge
Activities to explore values informing future coastal planning

The feedback we receive will inform the Gorge Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy, a collaboration between by the Township of #Esquimalt , the District of #Saanich , the City of #VictoriaBC and the Town of #ViewRoyal with support from the #CapitalRegionalDistrict.

Refreshments will be provided.

Registration is required. If we reach capacity for the event, we will take a waitlist and may add an additional event.

For other ways to provide input, please complete the online survey and identify places that are important to you or where you have experienced flooding on our interactive map at engage.victoria.ca/gorge-flooding.

Accessibility and Parking:

#FreeChildcare will be provided on-site for the duration of the event.

#FreeParking is available at the Esquimalt Gorge Park Pavilion, including 10 #AccessibleParking stalls and four electric vehicle chargers.

Accessible by bus routes 14 and 26 and a short walk from routes 8, 9 and 11.

A bike rack is available.

The Puquios System of Nazca

The arid Nazca region of Peru is dotted with spiral-shaped indentations, part of an irrigation system that helped indigenous civilizations thrive here before European contact. Although the region’s rainfall varies year-to-year, it never amounts to much. So pre-Columbian Nazcans turned instead to underground aquifers to gather and transport water.

An aerial view of several puquois chimneys near Nazca, Peru.

Aquifers in the region slope downward, following the local geology. Puquios builders began by digging a preliminary well in the highlands, tunneling down until they reached the aquifer. Then they built a horizontal tunnel underground, sloping gently downward, toward the location where water was needed. Along that roughly horizontal tunnel, they built additional chimneys, the spiraling mouths of which are seen above. These chimneys are thought to serve multiple purposes. They provide maintenance access to the aqueduct tunnel, and their shape may help funnel wind underground to oxygenate the water and help keep it flowing. Eventually, the underground tunnel would exit into an open trench and a reservoir, providing year-round water for irrigation and personal use.

Although the puquios cannot themselves be dated through usual archaeological means, the current consensus is that they originate from around 500 C.E., with subsequent modifications by both indigenous and colonial inhabitants. Impressively, several dozen puquios are still providing water today. (Image credits: Ab5602/Wikimedia, PsamatheM/Wikimedia, and R. Lasaponara et al.; research credit: R. Africa: Small Savings Can Build Africa's Grand Infrastructure: [Daily News] When we think of building an SGR railway line, a massive hydroelectric dam, or a modern expressway, the first image that comes to mind is usually billions of dollars in financing, often from foreign loans, or grants. Rarely do we pause to imagine that the foundation of such mega-projects can be laid with something as humble as ten… newsfeed.facilit8.network/TMb8 #Africa #Infrastructure #Savings #Investing #EconomicGrowth

@f4grx @arstechnica @BNetzA nodds in agreement #infrastructure that is a.natural monopoly like fiber networks, power/water/sewage grids and frequencies should be administrated on a state-owned organization basis with said irganizations sole mission to maintain, expand and improve said infrastructure and their sole income being providing said infrastructure on a non-discriminatory basis to suppliers and being paid a fixed, per client fee for doing so.

  • Similar to how grid companies, MNOs and Fiber/Telephony networks charge electricity provders / MVNOs and ISPs today for selling services to consumers over their infrastructure.

As of now espechally MNOs and Fiber operators are stealing each other profits and killing each others ROI by redundant coverage in high-density urban areas whilst systematically neglecting rural areas...

"From a political economic point of view, it’s easy to understand one reason the highway system continues to grow: construction companies and their investors expect steadily growing revenues & profits, and successfully prevail on politicians to keep the govt funds flowing....[but] the battle against congestion is never won."

I found a episode of the Win-Win Podcast where Isabelle Boemeke dives into some of her key theses! If you’re curious about her ideas on energy abundance, nuclear power, and sustainable growth, it’s definitely worth a listen. @collectifission @Ardubal @engravecavedave @Tallish_Tom

One of the things that stood out to me was how the conversation between @livboeree.bsky.social and Isabelle Boemeke tackles a fundamental question: Energy is the lifeblood of civilization, but how do we balance abundance with sustainability? Their discussion explores why nuclear power could be a game-changer—covering everything from safety and infrastructure to public perception—and breaks it down into some really thought-provoking angles:

- Why Pit Renewables Against Nuclear?
The episode makes a compelling case for why the ‘either/or’ mindset is holding us back. With innovations like decentralized grids and small modular reactors, the future of energy might be far more collaborative than we’ve imagined.

- Nuclear Power and AI: Surprising Parallels
Did you know nuclear power and AI share striking similarities? Both are transformative technologies that face public skepticism and require responsible stewardship. Isabelle draws fascinating parallels between the two, asking: How can we learn from the past to build a better future?

- Energy Abundance: Beyond Power
Energy abundance isn’t just about keeping the lights on—it’s about lifting people out of poverty, enabling innovation, and creating a sustainable future. Isabelle and Liv explore how we can turn this vision into reality. What’s your biggest hope for the future of energy?

- The Role of Government: Incentives and Innovation
Government policies can make or break the energy transition. Isabelle discusses how smart incentives could fast-track nuclear innovation and asks: What changes would you like to see to make this happen?

I’m amused at the fact that this is framed in terms of #AI supremacy. China has been investing in energy infrastructure—particularly CLEAN energy—for decades now, long before AI was a twinkle in Marc Andreessen’s eye.

The lesson to be learned here is that intentional investment in fundamental capabilities pays off in the long run. The same lesson can be applied to other infrastructure like rail, broadband, early warning/disaster response systems, etc. Small, consistent investments move mountains over time.

Flock’s Aggressive Expansions Go Far Beyond Simple Driver #Surveillance

The cloud #AutomaticLicensePlateReader ( #ALPR or #LPR ) company #Flock is building a dangerous nationwide mass-surveillance #infrastructure as we have been pointing out for several years now. The problem with #MassSurveillance is that it always expands beyond the uses for which it is initially justified — and sure enough, Flock’s system is undergoing insidious expansion across multiple dimensions.

Recycling Water

As regions are stressed by severe drought, communities considering how to stretch their water supply increasingly turn to the option of reclaiming wastewater. As Grady explains in this video, that idea faces both technological and psychological challenges. But neither, it turns out, is insurmountable. (Video and image credit: Practical Engineering)
