The problem of too big, Mastodon

I would start to say, with care, that #Mastodon is now heading in the wrong direction. Not because it’s inherently bad, or malicious, or “captured” in some conspiratorial sense. But because it’s become too dominant, tipping the scales far away from the diversity and messiness that a healthy #Fediverse needs.

This isn’t about blame, it’s about balance. To keep the #openweb alive and meaningful, we need to nurture other codebases, other, paths, cultures, and radically different […]

We are happy to share that 62 projects will receive grants from the NGI Zero Commons Fund. We congratulate the selected projects and look forward to their contributions to increasing society's digital autonomy.

Ranging from browser-based cellular networking to decentralised social media, and professional print, these projects are showing that a bright digital future is not only possible but already being built.

Come over and meet the projects!

@maskedwitch it's not a cryptocurrency, it's a payment system which is similar to paying in cash. It's anonymous for the sender, but not for the receiver, meaning that it can be checked (which is good against money laundering, tax evasion, etc.). It's also not using blockchain.

There is support to it, and it has been usable in Switzerland recently. It's also supported by NLnet/NGI.

🌐✨The #NGIForum25 kicked off with a powerful keynote by Thibaut Kleiner (EU Commission):

🔹 We’re building, not monetizing — much value lost
🔹 70% of open source communities are in Europe, but commercial gains go mostly to the US
🔹 Time to scale & monetize sustainable open solutions
🔹 Proud to introduce the Open Internet Stack, building on NGI pioneers
🔹 Let’s turn passion projects into strategic, revenue-generating engines

🇪🇺 Major moment at #NGIForum25! Thibaut Kleiner, director #DGCONNECT at the European Commission is delivering the keynote that's setting the strategic direction for Europe's digital sovregnity and future.

"We started the #NGI community 10 years ago. My message is that we are also at a stage where we need to move on. We need to go to the next stage. We want to go from communities to products and that's why we introduced this concept of Open Internet Stack," said Thibaut Kleiner.

This #NGIFORUM panel on #governance is interesting. What is missing is that the is a native #openweb project that came directly out of the original ActivityPub outreach to the #EU

hamishcampbell.com/?s=OGB this so far has been ignored by the funders, you can see this in the link above. Q. When will we support native paths to balance the current #NGO and #geekproblem mess in the bureaucratic paths.

"What went wrong"!!! It is a good slogan. Yes #NGI it is a mess creating #techshit to feed the fashionistas. So good question.

Better #FOSS governance is a part of rebalancing this, so please look at the link above, thanks.

And if you want to be a prat about this - from a polemical view, hamishcampbell.com/maybe-we-do

On the current talk, we need government to legislate to open up the current internet providers, both mobile and fixed, to change their networks to be more friendly to user, grassroots, lead p2p and local hosting. This will need #EU and national governments to shape this change by intervening in these markets, to open them to this native #openweb path.

This could be a positive way of unblocking the current hamishcampbell.com/?s=geekprob as the negative way is currently being blocked by the narrowness of current #NGI funding.
