Great news! They are ripening right now!
I tried the tips offered by you all and also the last site linked by @kellyromanych which was the most specific one for my needs. Even then I tried the 4 methods of: slight give, twist off tree to pick, smell and color. The ONE I tried (tip was try 1 and if too tart leave rest to try another day) had a very small amount of “give”. I was able to twist it off tree without dropping all the rest there. It was bright green but had a little yellow on one side, and after I picked it. stem end did smelly “limey”.
Son and I tried each half this key lime small lime by squeezing juice on a tortilla chip and a sprinkle of salt on top. (I was shown this by a Hispanic friend in Tucson at a full Mexican restaurant). We were happy. Now we’ll wait a day or 2 longer and pick only as we will use that day. I think since we extra watered this tree over the last 5 months is why there’s a bumper crop of limes.
Now, to check that link for the yellowing leaves issue (thanks @meganL )
