Today in Labor History July 19, 2012: The People's Protection Units (YPG) captured the city of Kobanî without resistance, starting the Rojava conflict in Northeast Syria. In 2014, The Kobani Canton declared autonomy from Syria. Supporters claim they have implemented a form of libertarian socialism, influenced by American anarchist Murray Bookchin, with decentralization, gender equality and local governance through direct democracy; created worker cooperatives and govern the through local councils, each with one male and one female co-president. The councils have gender quotas requiring at least 40% female participation. They have banned child marriages and honor killings. They are attempting to replace punitive justice with a system of restorative justice. And women play a prominent role on the battlefield, as well as within the political system. Yet private property remains a part of their system, which is inconsistent with Bookchinite anarchism. And according to Andrea Glioti, remnants of the PKK’s Stalinist past remain in Rojava. He cites the ubiquitous portraits of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, often accompanied by the slogan “There’s no life without a leader.”

Der Umgang mit Minderheiten ist ein entscheidender Punkt in Bezug auf die Wahrung von Menschenrechten und damit auch sozialer gesellschaftlicher Perspektive. Der Einsatz der islamistischen HTS Miliz, neu definiert als staatliche Armee des Übergangspräsidenten Syriens al Scharaa, gegenüber Minderheiten mit dem Ziel eine zentralistische Regierung in Damaskus durchzusetzen, lässt schlimmes befürchten. #Syrien ist ein multiethnisches Staatsgebilde, bewohnt von arabischen, kurdischen, turkmenischen, assyrisch/aramäischen, drusischen, jesidischen Menschen (und weiteren). Der Versuch die verschiedenen Kulturen und Religionen in einen autoritär-sunnitischen-dschihadistisch zentralistischen Staat zu pressen, ist auf Gewalt gegründet und steht einem föderativen System diametral gegenüber. Die Form autoritärer Gesellschaftsordnung, gegründet auf die Gewalt von Milizen wie HTS und SNA mit Al Kaida Hintergrund, findet nicht von ungefähr Unterstützung durch das #Erdoganregime und westliche Staaten. Auch die deutsche Regierung fordert auf, Al Scharaa eine Chance zu geben. Nordostsyrien #Rojava hingegen, ist mit seinem Gesellschaftsmodell der Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter, um nur einen entscheidenden Punkt zu nennen, Ausdruck einer völlig anderen freiheitlich emanzipativen Philosophie und Lebensrealität. Es sind nicht Tausende im Kampf gegen den Terror des IS gestorben, um nun widerstandslos die Wiedererrichtung einer Variation des autoritär- islamistischen Staates hinzunehmen.
