@ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill also #BlackBerry's #PlayBook #Tablet was released as a accessory screen for their Phones, which gave it "#WiiU-Effect" in terms of marketing.

  • Plus #RIM relying hard on business clients and their proprietary applianced mail systems and having big carriers upsell to business people made them look outdated & quite literally out of touch once #iPhone went mainstream.

I mean, the hardware was never their problem and #SMS-Typists swear by their #BlackberryCurve's #keyboard but BlackBerry's #toolchain - just like #SymbianOS's - was just hideous to the point that devs like @fuchsiii didn't even want to try making #Apps for those devices.

  • Unlike #Mozilla fucking up #FirefoxOS by refusing to sell devices to #developers, by the time RIM & #Nokia came from their high horses, their market shares had been squeezed into mere "rounding errors" by #iOS and #Android as it was way cheaper and easier to get #Apps developed, tested, sold, bought and use them than on their devices.

#Sony even released some #Symbian #S60 devices but since they didn't have the same signing keys, one couldn't even #sideload apps (not to mention they didn't had the #OviStore on those either!)...

@Gleisplan

The stuff I have in my drawers of geekery.

I used Symbian OS for years. It was a fantastic operating system which Nokia used a version of.

Me? Why I had a Psion Series 5 then a Nokia communicator. Until recently I used the series 5 as a clean and distraction free word processor. The keyboard is the best pocket keyboard ever made.

Virtually Board Snowboarding for #Symbian s80 has finally been found! This is another thing that indirectly, but confirms that prototype of second part for #NGage may actually exist. By the way, developer of game is Springtoys Ink. And game is not written on x-forge. Info provided by Ink321.

Anyway, requiring stuff to be signed is idiotic. I'd love to keep developing for my #blackberry but thanks to the idiotic requirements of developer certificates and signed applications it is now impossible as the vendor has closed the signing services. And there is no workaround afaik.
Same with #symbian I think.
There will be no #retrocomputing with these devices now or in the future.

Ten years ago Microsoft absorbed the handset division of Nokia. The world's biggest operating systems vendor was going mobile in a big way, and buying the erstwhile world leader in mobile phones to ensure its success.

Barely two years after it was announced, the whole thing fell apart and Microsoft wrote the whole thing off as a tax loss.

@RickJ Ja, Sommersturm muss sein. 😀

This is my ultimate goal with #tior: a multiplexed #TTY and file transfer through serial. It won't happen fast I'm barely gettting #ZMODEM together and need to finish the UI for my client after that.

Here I've carved up high-level goal what I have in mind: https://github.com/de-vri-es/serial2-rs/issues/6#issuecomment-1837024452

IMHO this is totally modern world thing. When I was still working e.g. with Nokia Linux phones security, earlier that on #Symbian, serial port was used a lot. Then it sort of phased out for a number of years in my work life but today with the maker community, all sorts of #SBC's and affordable #FPGA's the stocks are rising again. Of course if you've been all the time working on embedded, serial has been around for all this time. It is pretty weird that minicom and lrzsz still rock the world in that arena.

When you work on a a power on for a new hardware device, it is the first channel that gets usually enabled. And e.g. like any FPGA design or something you put to let's say to Arduino it is simplest route to get some communications on going.

So yeah, I really think this sort of endeavour does matter.

Two more planned #Nokia N-Gage launch titles that had prototypes done but never made it past that:

Bounce and Kart Racer (or Kart Racing, depending on the source)

Anyone out there with contacts to former staff members of #Kuju Entertainment? If so, please get in touch with me. I'm especially interested in getting in contact with Adrian B. (no, not Adrian Black 😂 )

Please boost. Thanks. 🙂
