It’s as if, after an unusually warm winter & spring, a switch flipped & we leaped from May to August.

My knees debated holding me up.

And I was the only human being in that place. Alone, but not lonely.

This was the last significant landmark before I reached my true destination.

We seem to be settling into a seasonal weather pattern, which is far better than the epic heat we’ve suffered the last few years.

I don’t fear August heat here like I do July heat. The days are shorter. It takes until afternoon to heat up.

A view from early in my last hike, about the time the drizzle stopped.

I’d ignored the weather forecast because the temperature was ideal, upper 60s (+19C). It stayed that cool, too.

Yet, even after my big day, I returned home & finished editing a chapter.

Okay, here’s the complete experience. Even when the stream was far below me, it was still loud.

This was one of those hikes where it’s impossible to see everything.

The Bitterroot Mountains never, ever disappoint. I also didn’t see anyone until on the way back.

What was really strange while hiking was how often I had really tiny streams running along the side of the old forest road on the opposite side from the larger stream.

Water stereo.

Eventually, each little stream would cross the road to join the larger one.

What a joy.

It drizzled on me to start yesterday. I paralleled this creek & listened to it all the way to my destination.

It was quite a hardship.

Thanks to the canyon’s echo, the sound never faded completely.

I’ll always remember this as the hike when I finally mastered trekking poles. It helped.
