In 1970 Gavin Daly published an article that looked carefully at mosses and lichens from the centre of Christchurch city, NZ, out to its periphery. Here are a couple of graphs from that article showing the sharp drop-off in mosses and lichens in the centre city.
It would be an interesting study to repeat as the differences now are not nearly as obvious. Things have definitely changed a lot since then.
