Cloud infrastructure is a major, if not the chokepoint of today's digital economy. Open Markets Institute in their new report "Engineering the Cloud Commons" suggest a great three-pronged approach to address the current extreme dependence on the three hyperscalers Amazon, Microsoft and Google:
1. utility-style regulation to ensure safety, transparency, interoperability and data portability as well as fair and non-discriminatory access;
2. structural separation to turn hyperscalers into stand-alone entities in order to prevent self-preferencing and cross-subsidisation; and
3. public investment in order to drive e.g. public compute to create a more diverse offering on the market.

The devil is always in the detail, so this is a lot of food for thought and follow-on discussion!

#Pinterest 's user experience #ux is horrendous these days. I remember back when it was a board you could pin things on. Now I have to click 6 menus deep to get back to my board.

When I click my board I have to click another link to "View board" rather than see #ads and #AIslop *inspired by* my board. Just give me my board! Give me your thoughts about it AFTER you let me use MY board!

Can folks suggest any #Fediverse #alternatives to this #oldmanyellingatclouds?

on my way to get rid of US services i try to stop using iCloud for storing photos from my iPhone but it seems like nothing really works well.

proton drive took a week to upload the 120Gb of photos once, and now tells me every few days again that it’s „preparing to backup 19000 photos“, including long hangs at start, etc.

Nextcloud keeps just behaving strange.

it’s a long way to go.
