Morning doodle: Rufescent Imperial-Pigeon (bird picked at random)

I love a fancy little pigeon (this is actually one of the biggest pigeon species apparently)!

This doodle took me 2h10 to complete!

A couple photos from my blog in April of 2005! I wasn’t sure what camera I had back then, but a little sleuthing turns up Nikon D70, my first DSLR. The blog post had a half dozen comments trying to ID the bird, consensus was Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Slightly different shot of kinglet, you can see its toes clasping the branch and how the slender sticks-for-legs fold a bit to provide balance and it leans forward to look somewhere.

In Kameralinsen kann man sich selbst auch sehr schön erkennen

ein großes schwarzes Auge eines Molukken-Kakadus von ganz nah. Im Auge spiegelt sich etwas der Hintergrund hinter dem Fotografierenden, anscheinend ein Fenster. Das Auge ist umrahmt von weißen Augenlidern mit zwei kleinen schwarzen Pünktchen auf dem oeberen Lid, die wie flaches Rundseil aussehen und viele kleine Fältchen haben, daran anschließend ganz feine, kleine Federchen in weiß.

Herr und Frau Kernbeisser mischen sich unter das Volk.
Begegnungen unter'm Futterhaus.

Einige Magnolienblüten sind heute Nacht erfroren. Die Sonne scheint. Sie weiss von nichts. Einen guten Start in die Woche.

Männlicher Kernbeisser unter dem Futterhaus. Zwischen den grauen Steinen liegen unzählige Körner, die am frühen Morgen bereits von anderen Vögeln "über Bord" geschmissen wurden. Der Kernbeisser ist von der linken Seite zu sehen, den Kopf etwas nach vorne gebogen. Vor ihm schaut Herr Hausrotschwanz, der von der rechten Seite zu sehen ist, überrascht in die Kamera.

Gleiche Stelle, einige Sekunden später. Nun befindet sich ein männlicher Spatz vor dem Kernbeisser, der im Hintergrund ein wenig unscharf zu sehen ist.

Herr und Frau Kernbeisser waren heute gemeinsam unterwegs. Die Gelegenheit, die beiden gleichzeitig auf ein Foto zu bekommen, bietet sich relativ selten. Hier sind sie nun beide. In der linken Bildhälfte der weibliche Kernbeisser, von links zu sehen, in der rechten Bildhälfte der Göttergatte, ebenfalls von der linken Seite aufgenommen, allerdings dreht er den Kopf in Richtung Kamera.

Zum Abschluss noch einmal den männlichen Kernbeisser in Nahaufnahme und frontal. Der kräftige Schnabel ist leicht geöffnet. Man könnte sich beinahe einbilden, man höre ihn lachen.

Meisen sind in der Lage ihre Nahrung an die Jahreszeit anzupassen. Im Frühjahr und Sommer ernähren sie sich von Insekten. Auch ihren Nachwuchs füttern sie damit. In der kalten Jahreszeit schalten sie dann auf Pflanzensamen um. Besonders beliebt sind Sonnenblumenkerne. Das hat den Vorteil, dass Meisen nicht nennenswert ziehen müssen.

Ein männlicher Buchfink (Fringilla coelebs) läuft auf einem mit Moos bedeckten waagerechten Ast entlang. Der Betrachter sieht ihn im Profil.
Der Vogel erreicht eine Körperlänge von 14 bis 18 Zentimeter. Unabhängig vom Geschlecht weisen Buchfinken einen auffallenden weißen Schulterfleck, eine weiße Flügelbinde und weiße äußere Steuerfedern auf.
Bei Buchfink-Männchen sind die Körperunterseite und die Kopfseiten bräunlichrosa bis rotbraun. Der Oberkopf, der Nacken und die Halsseiten sind im Sommerhalbjahr auffällig graublau, im Winterhalbjahr mehr bräunlichgrau. Die Stirn ist schwarz, der Rücken ist kastanienbraun und der Bürzel ist grünlich. Der Schnabel ist beim Männchen im Frühjahr stahlblau, ansonsten hornfarben.

They are intelligent and known for storing food in hidden caches, using complex memory to retrieve them. Their lifespan in the wild is about 9 years.

Apparently these are called Wood Ducks because they nest in tree cavities. I always thought it was because they look like they've been carved out of wood and painted With toy soldier paints.
