The question being proposed for an Alberta referendum has been revealed by the separatists. They're going to try to get 600,000 'supporters' before launching the campaign to have a referendum this year.
Their proposed question is:
"Do you agree that the province shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province of Canada?"
The question in the 1995 Québec referendum was:
"Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?”
And as for why they want this referendum. Well, it's the oil and taxes of course:
“Rath and his fellow separatists depicted an independent Alberta with no regulations from Ottawa or eastern Canadian interests, lower provincial taxes plus no federal taxes. They suggested oil and gas development would double within five years, multiple new pipelines would extend into the United States, and residents of a breakaway Alberta republic would still keep their Canadian passports and Canada Pension Plan entitlements.”
isn't there some saying about people wanting cake... and eating... /s
And of course... not even a suggestion of implications for First Nations or Treaty lands.
