I'm glad companies like #FairPhone and #Framework exist. They're doing things in an unconventional way to provide long lasting, repairable, upgradable hardware to people who want that sort of thing.

If the federal government decided what types of phones and laptops would be produced, I highly doubt they'd be like what these companies make. They'd turn to a big tech company.

This is proof that companies can make durable goods today, in our current economic system. They are doing it. Right now.

@Erklaerbaer macbooks aren't a good start. It'll be attached to a usb network adapter constantly and also it's charger since the last generation intel macbooks have terrible battery life under Linux, and it'll throttle constantly since the last generation intel macbooks have a terrible power curve, something Apple kind of addressed with macOS.

If you want a easy place to start, get a #framework or a (older) #thinkpad would be my advice

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 (released in 2024) has a ifixit repairability score of 9/10. Some pros: Storage and memory are readily repairable/upgradeable using industry-standard parts. The battery is easily replaced, and the keyboard replacement procedure is best-in-class. Overall high modularity, apart from a handful of soldered ports and a bundled fan/heat sink assembly.
