Back in winter 2019, when Twitter was still a thing, I posted my surprising find of the first hedgehog active in July in the South Island of NZ. At least, that was the first hedgehog I'd seen in July, and the first on #iNaturalist

I've been mapping and counting all roadkill hedgehogs I've seen since 2003 on my bike commute to work, so seeing one in July for the first time meant it was something unusual. Until then, all the hedgehogs had been hibernating by July.

You can probably sense where this is going.

Fast forward to today, 17 July 2025, and I saw a dead hedgehog on the road while biking into work that had been killed overnight. #iNaturalistNZ now has 32 observations of hedgehogs in July from the South Island, with all the active/fresh ones since 2019.

Winter isn't what it used to be, and that is changing nature.

#MarkethingMonday Book trailer! Haven't edited anything for a while and I'd forgotten how much fun it is.

I've uploaded closed captions and hopefully will have an AD version as well but I need to talk to the AD folk at work to make sure I've done it properly.

So, anyone fancy some hedgehog shifter fiction? Full of colourful characters and sarcastic remarks?

Appreciate any shares.

I put some hedgehog food on the steps and inside the shelter, to hopefully show them it's safe for them in there. They haven't gone inside yet but the big hedgehog is happily munching away on the steps. And practicing his jumps, lol.

I was sitting a few feet away at this time, and must have been visible to them, but they didn't seem to mind :)

It was nearly completely dark out and Lemon sat on the windowsill, looking like she had spotted something very interesting out in the yard. So I turned off all the indoor lights and squinted really hard, then I saw something by the water dish that I had left out for the birds.

Turned out there was a little hedgehog, happily drinking away. Well spotted, Lemon!

Found a #hedgehog in our garden. We have also seen one last year, and (is I remember correctly) also before. So it seems like a regular visitor.

It's hiding behind a pile of leaves, and you can see only hints of the spikes on the photo. I guess it makes sense to leave some corners of your garden untidy.
