I'm still pissed that I can't add or remove music from my iPod Touch. It's 17 years old, sure, but it works fine. I didn't imagine, when Apple said they were discontinuing support for iPods, that they'd actually *remove functionality.*

Though I also don't know why I'm surprised.

Do you know of any way to get music from your Mac onto an MP3 player? I don't want to use my phone or subscriptions for music, I just want to be able to add a few songs now & again.

Welp, it appears when it comes to just pulling photos from an #iPhone or #iOS device in general, like in this case an #iPod - I don't even need to bother pulling out my Mac (to use Image Capture) or my #Windows VM.

Shit mounts, and browsable, just fine on my
#Linux PC's #KDE Plasma desktop after accepting the permission/trust prompt :neofox_boop_woozy: That's actually super cool. I still need my Windows VM (or my Mac) to make my local backups though, but that's no biggie.

There technically is a solution for
(iPhone) backups too on Linux.. but that's made and maintained by the community and relies heavily on reverse engineering and Apple not... breaking stuffs - so I wouldn't really recommend it. There's also no GUI for it yet too, I don't think.

Now that #Windows has the #AppleDevices app to replace #iTunes when it comes to making local, complete, encrypted backups of #Apple devices i.e. #iPhone, #iPod, #iPad, etc. - Windows also needs #macOS 's #ImageCapture app for quick exports of photo/video files. That'll be nice.

Update:

Well, apparently it's already achievable simply by having the Apple Devices app installed, and using the default Photos app on Windows.

Doesn't seem to be working for me tho (the device isn't showing up in the Photos app, tho is on the Apple Devices app) - but that could just be either the fact that I'm doing this on a virtual machine (on
#Linux), or bcos my device is an (outdated) iPod lol.

Cool tho I guess that this simple functionality isn't somehow
exclusive to Macs but also Windows PCs.

I find this interesting:
"Proton itself has also been victim of Apple’s censorship. In 2020, Apple threatened to take Proton VPN out of the App Store unless we removed language from our App Store description that said the app could be used to “unblock censored websites.”

Proton · Proton joins suit against Apple for predatory practices that harm developers and consumers | ProtonApple's anti-competitive App Store policies are gouging consumers, enabling censorship, and harming privacy-focused developers. We're joining a lawsuit to restore internet freedom.

Continued thread

OK, let's try this again...

I couldn't start the next 200 miles of the Oregon Coast Trail without another iPod in my pack. Picked up a refurbished (but not modded) 60GB 5th Gen iPod Classic for about $100 and it's working well so far!

Crucially, I also picked up this (can I call it vintage?) Griffin armband. I am NOT losing this one to the ocean!
