The ‘Alternative for Germany’ (Afd) has been the second strongest party in the Bundestag since February 2025. There it is doing what we have been able to observe at a local political level for several years:
it blocks democratic decision-making processes, attacks political ‘opponents’ in a targeted manner and normalises right-wing extremist arguments.
The CDU's vote together with the AfD on an anti-refugee bill in January was not necessarily a surprise, but nevertheless a turning point.
How did it get this far? Who paved the way for the AfD? What does this mean for civil society and an anti-fascist left?
We want to explore these and other questions with Judith Goetz and Thorsten Mense. They are the authors of their analyses with a view to the situation on the ground.
