#RHEL 9.5 debuts alongside #AlmaLinux, Rocky, and #Oracle updates
#RedHat released version 9.5 of its flagship #Linux distribution. It was followed five days later by AlmaLinux 9.5 "Teal Serval." The following day, #RockyLinux 9.5 followed, with the shortest set of release notes of the trio. Also on November 19, Rocky's partner in the #OpenELA group, Oracle, put out #OracleLinux 9 Update 5. As is normal for RHELatives, they all share much the same list of new features.

The Register · RHEL 9.5 debuts alongside AlmaLinux, Rocky, and Oracle updatesBy Liam Proven

The philosophical differences between keeping things updated everywhere and long term supported ”stability” bit me yesterday when #Ansible failed to run #DNF on a #RHEL 8 compatible #OracleLinux server when executed from my #macOS laptop with current software versions installed. Looks like DNF gets executed with #Python3.6 no matter which other versions are installed. Is there any workaround that doesn’t involve downgrading or keeping an old environment around? #DevOps #Automation

@mac @Rusty @ubuntu that depends heavily on the used applications.

I've seen #Solaris and #OracleLinux in #ScientificComputing and #CriticalInfrastruxture, alongside #RedHat in #Finance and #Engineering.

#Apple's #macOS is just the primary supported Platform for most #CCSS in #CreativeWork made by #Adobe, #BlackmagicDesign as well as #AVID and #Steinberg.

My favorite for the average "#TechIlliterate" Office use is #UbuntuLTS and for #Gaming it's #pop_os...

@lonjil @landley maybe #Google as a Corporation doesn't beg for money whilst offering millions in paychecks?

Granted, they finance it with their #Adware aka. #Browser and selling off users' data being member if the #PRISM program which AFAIK is still operational and none of the #GAFAMs ever apologized for!

But maybe that's quite hyperbolic from my POV...

What is needed however is real competition that is cross-platform and just works.
Whether one uses #Gecko or #WebKit or whatever is kinda irrelevant.
( I can also use #LynxBrowser but we can all agree that none of the "#TechIlliterates" and "#Normies" would accept that level of feature regression nowadays!)

Google may have droppted their "#DontBeEvil" #Canary but at least Google's #FLOSS-licensed code is 'salvageable' in the worst-case scenario just like #OpenSolaris's & #OpenOffice's code got salvaged into the #illumos and #LibreOffice projects respectably when #Oracle was allowed to buy #Sun and went full "asshole mode" on #OpenSource projects (which is why I don't trust #OracleLinux and won't use it!)...

Episode 13 – Linux Forklore everywhere, a K8 book club, 500 Portainer templates and a podcast recommendation

Linux forklore everywhere

In the last episode I talked about a change Red Hat is making, specifically not releasing RHEL sources like they used to. There are some nuances to that, so I would not have expected a careful take from Red Hat’s competitors, but what Oracle did was definitely surprisingly low.

A K8 book club

When I see or hear of a good idea, I make a note in my Apple Notes and drag it out when the time comes. So with this, I present the K8 bookclub, hosted at https://www.santana.dev/book-club. The Kubernetes Book Club is a community group that discusses books about Cloud Native

Go have at it.

A podcast recommendation

Give a listen to “For the long run” with Jonathan Levitt. He’s a runner, cyclist and podcast host from Boston, MA. This podcast is exploring the why behind what keeps runners running long, strong, and motivated. Jonathan is super-connected in the field and I have listened to some great conversations, which is one of the podcast formats that I wish I could do some of, so why don’t you come and be my guest?
