OSM US<p>The OSM US team is proud to share our 2024 Annual Report. Then there are non-routing uses. Snapchat, #Wandrer, #Strava, Esri maps (used in a lot of GIS products), Facebook (map shown for events, business locations, etc), anything using #MapBox (lots of websites & apps, big & small), Craigslist, Shopify(?), etc all use #OSM in some way or another. So OSM gets lots of mainstream usage through non-obvious ways.

@colinstu @kkarhan I just want to contribute a slightly different perspective regarding usage. It may be true that few people use #OSM directly for navigation, but a huge number use it either indirectly or in other ways. Off the top of my head, it is used in Lyft's routing app & OSM data is present in Apple Maps (mostly small city or rural areas at this point); many lesser known but non-techy/enthusiast routing apps, such as Magic Earth, use OSM data.

So…I wrote a script to send messages to #OpenStreetMap users en masse.

I’ve been using and refining it for many months. It has progress reporting, and it automatically waits and resumes when it hits the API rate limit…I’ve used it to send mapping party invitations to thousands of users.

I’m also planning to extend it, so it can…

  • …send messages to people in or around specific areas
  • …send messages to all users who have clicked “Attend” on an OSM Calendar event
  • …send messages to new OSM users
  • …send messages to OSM users who have made their 10th edit.

Should I release it as freedom-respecting software? (a.k.a. libre or “open source” software) [1]

On one hand, it could be used for spamming users.

On the other hand…

  • It’s very handy for mapping party invitations. We’ve been able to reach out to so many people thanks to this script. OSM DMs are also sent to users’ emails.
  • Even if I don’t release it, it’s not like someone else couldn’t write their own such script against the OSM messaging API…
  • If used for spam, there’s a button to mute/block users on OSM…and the operations team @osm_tech could just ban the spammers.
  • It’s written in a rather unpopular language (Common Lisp), which could - I’m guessing - also deter spammers. Currently, it can only be used from a Lisp REPL, not a UNIX shell. (I could always implement a shell interface too…but for interactive use, Emacs + SLIME blows any shell out of the water.)

I guess there’s also a third way - make it a private repo and give read access to the code to established members of the #OSM community on request.

[1] Probably under the AGPL…let me know if you recommend a different license.

OSM Town | Mapstodon for OpenStreetMapMapComplete (@MapComplete@en.osm.town)#MapComplete can now be downloaded as #Android #app from the official #Fdroid-repositoried! Download via https://f-droid.org/packages/org.mapcomplete/ This is a packaged version of the webversion, so features will remain the same between visiting the website and the app. Using the app has the advantage that all assets are already on your device, requiring less network.

BTW
#OrganicMaps does not require a login of any kind.

BUT if you have an #OpenStreetMaps account you can login and the app makes it super super easy to add a missing place. I think the UI is easier than using the official #osm web interface, esp. for adding business hours, for example.

📱🗺️ 𝗤𝗚𝗜𝗦 users can now integrate 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 also in the mobile app 𝗤𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱.

Thanks to the release of a new plugin, all main functions of openrouteservice can be used in QField, such as generating routes for different means of transport profiles.

The first basic version of the plugin, developed by HeiGIT in collaboration with OPENGIS.ch, can be found here: github.com/GIScience/qfield-or

It seems #MagicEarth are at least listening to the user community and holding off on the switch to a paid app for #Android until they can find some payment method that doesn't require Google service (I hope this doesn't mean that development stalls until they can get their revenue stream)

IMO if fhey are charging for it the app they should have a full website portal with payment facility *and* access to support with a ticketing system and facility to add crowdsourced map updates (rather than expecting endusers to work out which is #OSM and which is #Foursquare or other third parties), and not relying just on email or worse, Reddit) - basically all that #TomTom *used* to have not that long ago but abandoned...
