Like: There's not much of a technical reason something similar to @zulip 's #TUI - based client could exist for the aformentioned platfirms:

If people can build #bots for shite like #discord, #Telegram, etc. then why not make an actually good client ???

One thing that really pisses me off personally is the #regression in terms of #Messenger #Apps.

My personal distaste and dislike for #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider #services like #Signal ¹, #Telegram, #Discord ², #WhatsApp ³, #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams, etc. aside:

  • WHY is there no #CrossProvider #Messenger to handle that shite?

  • WHY does everyone of these shitty providers think people want to download their #bloated #WebApp that takes up triple digit Megabytes if not entire Gigabytes and will gobble up all the #RAM and #CPU each of them can??

This problem ain't new and already got solved for corporate social media ages ago! (Not to mention actually good messengers!)

So yeah, consider this a call for a @gajim / #Gajim or @pidgin / #Pidgin for garbage platforms!

  • Cuz back in the day we had way worse messengers yet people actually made #AIM, #ICQ, #MSN, #QQ, #IRC & #XMPP work just fine from one single "phat" client!

  • Can we please get that back?

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)Content warning: Rant re: Signal Shills being dangerous Tech Illiterates

@StopKillingGames petitions the #EU to forbid #commercial game publishers to disable (or "killl") the video #games (that people BOUGHT) remotely.

Their demand is surprisingly soft. It only heals a single symptom, but not the underlying problems. It's still better than nothing, and can get the ball rolling.

We need to see the bigger pictre: #Copyright ideology enables the destruction of #culture in the first place. #Proprietary software and #SaaS just suck in general.

@mit_scharf the problem with "threat scenarios" is that they tend to change quickly, non-consensual and without warning.

  • Demanding any #PII [even by virtue of being correlateable through circumstances] to be able to use a service is inherently bad, espechally since there is no "legitimate interest" for that.

"#KYC" is the illicit activity! and #Signal acts as a controlled opposition by virtue of being a #proprietary, #centralized, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider "solution" that subjects itself to a juristiction that has 0 #privacy laws and only #cyberfacism (see #CloudAct ) to boot...

  • I find it more fatiguing and also expensive to try to workaround shite than to migrate folks to secure standards because that's a one-time investment that I'm willing to take vs. having to jump through hoops and paywalls to acquire a working #SIM (or #eSIM) anonymously and maintaining it.

It's just not in the cards TBH!

Van Huffelen (@alexandravanhuffelen) was a great state secretary for digitalisation. We have/had a new government (that recently collapsed).

The policy in the Netherlands is indeed rather ok, but the policy is not followed. Especially not in the use of standard software for office use. It is all Microsoft. For me that is very weird, because exactly in this area are excellent #Free and #OpenSource options. But #government forces me to #proprietary.

I wish we live in a world in which the fact a #software is #FreeSoftware does not grant you any extra credit, but is just the expected default. And, that every #proprietary software is considered a social burden, selfish, the "awkward one", has to explain and justify itself, etc.

Currently, it is free software that constantly must explain and justify itself, is treated as "awkward", etc. Which is so annoying.

It's not us who take away your #freedom to use, copy, share and modify.

@BrodieOnLinux @qdot I find this to be the worst way to decide a #TechStack.

  • If #IT was developed and maintained that way, we'd not have #Linux or even #Windows, most likely not even #CPM & #UNIX because "everyone uses punchcards and tubes, so stop complaining!"...

#NetworkEffects are #toxic when it comes to #SaaS and #proprietary shite, regardless if the bad guys are #discord, #Autodesk, #Adobe, #Apple or #Microsoft for that matter. (Don't even get me started on #SAP & #Oracle!)…

  • I just don't vibe with that appeal and would rather #SelfHost than compromise. If that makes me an outlyer then I'm happy to pay that price!

But if I was wrong, I 'd not be called upon as a Linux #Sysadmin and to act as "#BenevolentDictator" in terms of Tech Stack Decisions...

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)@MxVerda@lgbtqia.space @BrodieOnLinux@mstdn.social @qdot@buttplug.engineer Well, depending on what you want to develop or communicate there are various options. - Many folks went from #GitHub to @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de / #Codeberg to do their #FLOSS development as it too has #IssueTrackers and means to discuss things without #loginwalled read-only access. Others like @torproject@mastodon.social have their own @gitlab@mastodon.social / #GitLab servers #SelfHosted. - If you want a #Chat then consider #LiberaChat if you don't demand #privacy. Otherwise @delta@chaos.social / #deltaChat and/or #XMPP via @monocles@monocles.social & @gajim@fosstodon.org may be an option. - If you do want some #LoginWalling for some reason, consider @zulip@fosstodon.org / #ZulipChat as it has a nice #threading model that can handle both asynchronous communication and high traffic without becoming unfindable or unarchiveable. Otherwise there's like @RocketChat@fosstodon.org / #RocketChat which also works great by my own experience. Case in point: #discord just makes it more cumbersome and painful than anything. It's basically *#Slack + #MicrosoftTeams, but worse*…

@dgar Love the variety of synonyms for "died" 😆

Lessons to be learned -
• Boycott #proprietary software - use #FreedomRespecting software (a.k.a. #Libre / #OpenSource / #FreeSoftware) which is free of corporate control, and
• Boycott #centralized services - use #federated services so you aren't locked into one service.

#XMPP is still around, and thriving.
