Another Doug Ford legal fiasco, this time in recycling. Experts find flaw in Ontario tire law. Critics say the provincial legislation allowed one company to “game” the system by collecting more tires than it needed to meet the target, thereby leaving other tire producers without enough tires to collect. #law #justice #ontario #recycling #environment

Workers are on strike against Republic Services - the waste disposal company - and there's no trash pickup in a whole bunch of areas.

That strike includes North King County and south Snohomish County, which is to say, hi.

Republic Services reps are doing a trash / recycling / etc dropoff location not far from me.

Does anyone know if the strikers have issued a statement opposing the use of those dropoffs? Do they have a position?

(It would be much easier and cheaper than trying to haul stuff to the closest transfer station, so I do actually care.)

I feel burnt out on the dismal diversion rates for household waste, and empties return is one of our limited recycling successes 😭

Ontario is still taking comments on its proposal to relax diversion rate requirements for household waste. Please leave a comment and tell him prostrating ourselves to corporate whining is no way to govern 🤬

ero.ontario.caAmendments to the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016 | Environmental Registry of OntarioWe are proposing to amend the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. These changes would enable Ontario’s producer responsibility framework to be more responsive to the needs of business and allow government to assess the effectiveness of any future changes to the framework.

The empties return program has been very successful. It's so successful in part because some folks subsist on or at least supplement their income with retrieving empties from trash and recycling bins for return.

We could easily make it relevent for higher income folk by increasing the deposit. Doug Ford would rather prioritize grocery conglomerates' retail space over effective recycling programs, though.

Reminder that under Ontario law, grocery stores and convenience stores are allowed to sell alcohol if and only if they process returned empties. That requirement has been suspended until next year, and many stores say they'd rather ditch alcohol sales than accept returns.

Watch for Doug Ford to cite the closure of 80-120 Beer Stores as why we have to retire empties returns, and please fight it!
