The U.N. refugee agency says the number of people forcible displaced by violence and persecution around the world has risen to more than 122 million, up by about 2 million from last year and a near-doubling over the last decade.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi nonetheless pointed to some “rays of hope” over the last six months like the return home of nearly 2 million Syrians as their country tries to recover from more than a decade of civil war. The findings come as the refugee agency released its Global Trends Report on Thursday.

@appassionato @bookstodon Thank you for recommending this powerful book. It is indeed a book for these times as people around the world are driven from their homes, communities and lives due to war, #climateBreakdown, persecution, #poverty, #fascism, and any number of other factors that rip us from the places and people we love. The life of a #refugee is no picnic nor is the #trauma that they carry as we read of these #Syrian refugees. #books #bookstodon #literaryfiction

you are not an "exile" because windows 10 is ending support. you are not a "refugee" for installing linux either. you are not a "survivor". there are actual people who meet the literal criteria for being a survivor, exile, refugee, etc who don't get to use these words for themselves and instead have the phrases co-opted for some technological moment where someone installs a different operating system on their computer. very frustrating. we can do better.

Ich suche einfache Bilder für einen Menschen mit Prädiabetes die kein deutsch und nur gebrochen English spricht (Muttersprache ist Krio) die einfach zeigen was gegessen werden darf/soll und was nicht.

Da kaum Schulbildung im Heimatland verfügbar war ist auch sowas wie das Konzept von Kohlehydraten etc nicht bekannt.

Kann jemand helfen? Kennt da jemand Hilfestellungen?

@RD4Anarchy @JapanProf the possibility that you're missing is that they are granted by rough global consensus – that is, that the authority is some reasonably large subset of "all of us".

I think that, in the aftermath of WWII, when the #RefugeeConvention and the concepts of #Genocide and #WarCrimes were fully established, there was globally a very widespread understanding that we could any of us, through no fault of our own, become a #Refugee or victim of a war crime...
