We don't need humans in #translation and #localization anymore, huh?
Let's put some #MachineTranslation services to the test with a simple English idiom!
"I'm a lady in the streets but a freak in the sheets" and its variations mean that you're one kind of person in public, but another in private, often with other words inserted to humorous effect.
Let's see how #GoogleTranslate, #DeepL, #ChatGPT and #Deepseek handle this for English to #German.
Conclusion in the comments.

An unprecedented effort has led to the most complete English translation of Capcom vs. SNK 2 for Dreamcast ever! Read Ateam's writeup on how he and his team of translators pulled it off:
Danish author Solvej Balle on her (planned) septology On the Calculation of Volume. The first two volumes (the only two currently available in English) have been much discussed in our office!
A CLASSIC ︱Lissa in Egyptian Arabic
When I first started learning Egyptian Arabic, there was one word that gave me a headache: lissa -لِسّه; sometimes spelled لِسَّى or لِسّة. Let's see why.#Egyptian Arabic #Translation

Speaking of translation fails, did you see this one: “Bâtir Maisons Canada”
Slogans are one of the most difficult things to translate, imho.
A three-word slogan can take just as much time to translate as a full page, if not more. Cultural context, space and host of other variables are only some of the challenges translators face. However, this was just so far off the mark that I’m left wondering how such a big team let something like this go to print?! #translation #election #Canada #french #language #cndpoli #politics

The 1535 Miles Coverdale #translation of the #Bible has "Thou shalt not need be afraid of any bugs by night" in Psalms 23 where most other translations has "... of the terror at night".
Oh, look! Now you can "master" any language by translating real-world news while you binge-watch #Netflix . Because nothing screams "fluent" like understanding half a sentence before realizing you've been reading the weather report upside down.

Translating patents does weird things to the brain. There are just so many times you can type "swivel/swiveling" before it stops looking like a word. And now I've typed it twice more.
Now that his books are in the local library, Jim reflects on the meaning that libraries have had for him.

I have more German -writing people in my TL now.
Even as followers : Danke schön !
Interesting for sure.
But:
German reading and speaking is not really a problem, while not really perfect either.
Writing is not good.
English and my own Dutch, sometimes ¨Double" , are better.
( Shame on me, because our Mom was from Osnabruck ).
On Friday I signed a contract with a well-known British publisher to translate a collection of Japanese literary essays for release this fall. I should be able to announce the title and publisher soon enough. #Japanese #literature #essay #collection #book #translation #booksky #translatesky
My biggest complaint about #Mastodon, at the moment, is the inability to #translate posts. Being given the option to translate a post, from a language you don't speak, should be on by default. There are some posts I can click an option to translate and others (see example image), I can't.
It does bug me as I would very much like to know what these #Japanese posts are saying, especially those that relate to #anime.
The global boom in translated Japanese literature has also been a boon for women writers and translators from diverse backgrounds, including the person behind the booknerdtokyo Instagram account. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2025/03/29/books/mizuki-tsujimura-yuki-tejima/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #culture #books #yukitejima #mizukitsujimura #literature #translation #books
I'm visiting my Mom in #Ottawa this weekend. Her MP has been handing out flag posters sporting the slogans "Strong and Free / Fort et Libre" and while I understand that "Il sait porter la croix" probably doesn't fit exactly, was a direct #translation the best move?
