Eugenia L<p>For my main PC &amp; laptop (all my other x86 computers are from 2017 &amp; prior, so I needed a new main computer), I just got this <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DELL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DELL</span></a> Inspiron 5640. It came preinstalled with Linux, 1 TB, 32 GB RAM, fingerprint reader, Core 7 150U CPU.</p><p>The trackpad is literally a sticky point (the Linux driver is to blame, and Canonical for not fixing it -- not DELL), but other than that, for the sub-$800 we paid is great. The fix was "almost easy": plug USB in, click on "Search" in the popup-box telling me that there is no driver, remember that I had created an HL-1430 PPD file with Open Printing, load that file from the Downloads folder, make a test print, done.</p><p>20 years old tech is robust, e.g., old laser printers and Ghostscript.</p><p><a href="https://www.openprinting.org/driver/hl1250" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">openprinting.org/driver/hl1250</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Calicosine<p>I've heard that modern Linux Mobile is about where Linux on the desktop was 20 years ago. In 2004, Ubuntu was released, and was called a distro that pretty much just works as long as you know enough of what you're doing. In 2024, the Furilabs FLX1 with FuriOS launched, which I've heard a lot about being a Linux phone that pretty much just works as you would expect a phone to work. Targea Caramar 🇨🇴<p>Welp, it happened again not 24 hours later. </p><p>At least now I know I can reinstall libasound2t64 and all related packages from Synaptic, reboot, and enjoy crisp sound with all my patchwork fixes intact. </p><p>I don't know why it keeps busting though, nor whether this "solution" will keep working indefinitely.</p><p>I'd just reinstalll the system... but Ubuntu 20.04 LTS comes pre-packaged with PipeWire instead of Pulse and I have no idea how to do the subwoofer fix with PipeWire. Therefore, it didn't find it and left me without sound.</p><p>One more thing to check next time my audio busts, I suppose</p>

Audrey Winter<p>My current plan with regard to the impending doom of <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Windows10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows10</span></a> is to set up a dual boot with <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Cinnamon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cinnamon</span></a> and use that until I get comfy enough to remove the Windows side of things. Ubuntu will do everything I need except cooperate with a Windows Steam games folder and I just don't feel like reinstalling everything under <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> right now.</p>
