Mike Kasprzak 🦖<p>With all that in mind, I'm leaning towards keeping things "simple" by just using <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Docker</span></a> <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Compose" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Compose</span></a>, and making custom <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Wolfi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wolfi</span></a> images where needed (PHP-FPM + APCu).</p><p>At least with Docker Compose, I can run the same script inside a Vagrant box for local testing. That's not to say I couldn't do that with everything (Nomad, Consul, Vitess), but it's a lot less work right now.</p><p>I'm still not sure where <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/HashiCorp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HashiCorp</span></a> <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Packer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Packer</span></a> fits into the picture, if it even does. 🤔</p>
Mike Kasprzak 🦖<p>Anyways, the last part of today's research dive was more <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Docker</span></a>.</p><p>The most interesting discovery was <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/distroless" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>distroless</span></a> images. I was familiar with <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Alpine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Alpine</span></a> <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>, but I hadn't really stumbled across distroless yet. Specifically I noticed that <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Envoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Envoy</span></a> shipped a distroless image, but neglected to really explain it short of "it's faster and better".</p><p>Google's distroless project is limited to standalone application runners (Node, Java), but <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/ChainGuard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChainGuard</span></a> has their <a href="https://jammer.social/tags/Wolfi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wolfi</span></a> images that cover more bases. 👍</p>
