Wordy Words on WordsLet’s talk about the <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kindle?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kindle</a> for a minute. When the Kindle first came out, I fell in love. I’m a huge book guy, but books are expensive, big, and heavy. For a guy that moves a lot, they could be a problem. But here, I saw the solution. The prices could be way lower. Scarcity wouldn’t be a thing anymore. Textbooks could be cheaper and easier to navigate. You could keep a whole library on one device! But it took until the Kindle3G for me to be able to afford one of these guys. Now I have a Paperwhite but, honestly, miss the 3G for the ability to shop anywhere and PHYSICAL BUTTONS! The real disappointment was that the cost of books wasn’t that much lower and scarcity was still a thing. Old Marvel prose novels never (or at least hadn’t for years and I’ve given up on the idea) made it to the device. Which is RIDICULOUS. If I were a publishing house, every single thing I published would be available. They left money on the table. Anyway… King also seemed like a huge Kindle fan as his was one of the biggest voices used to push it and it seemed inevitable to me that he would write a story involving one. It also deals with the Dark Tower. The story is fine. It’s more a fun story about a Kindle and a chance for him to talk about authors - something he loves to do. It’s fine. It’s an interesting story. I wonder if King’s changed his mind on the Kindle. Besides bringing mine on flights and to donate plasma, I know I’ve gone back to physical books. Wordy Words on WordsAs a young adult, there was this strange time where I got a job in a different town. I moved into it alone and worked for about a week before I was able to drive back home and get my wife and our few belongings (starting a life together is a weird thing to think back on). In that week, though, I had nothing in the house. I bought a TV because we didn’t have one (wasn’t able to get TV service until the first paycheck came in, though) and slept on the cardboard box it came in. It was the summer in Georgia so daily thunderstorms would happen in the evening and I just sat there on the floor until it was time to sleep on the box. But I did have this book so I was fine (more or less). Besides the jive - which is cringe-inducing to an uncomfortable level - I love this book. I thought the pacing was really good and I loved the space between the doors. I’ve read critiques that express distaste for King’s “boring,” parts like the space between doors or most of The Shining, but I think there’s purpose to it. The journey was supposed to be long and arduous and you don’t get that point across if you skip the space between the doors for the sake of a fast, exciting read. And, honestly, the story is better for it. This book also introduced Eddie, who just might be my favorite King character of all time. It was interesting re-reading this. Wordy Words on WordsNietzsche mentioned (by the way, have you guys read Nietzsche? Dude’s got some pretty crazy thoughts) this desire for a dignified suicide. I guess Nietzsche pops up with some random ideas but this one had more to do with control and bowing out rather than throwing up your hands. It kind of felt like our protagonist here was following a similar path. He BASICALLY gets a terminal illness, makes amends, gives away his cat, bids adieu to his friends, and then that’s all she wrote but it was on his schedule, not the illness’. That’s a dark interpretation, I’ll admit. A lighter interpretation is that Scott is becoming aware of the fact that his life isn’t representative of all lives and, as his perspective grew, he grew to be better than he was - he ELEVATED himself beyond his former self if you will. Anyway, it’s one of my favorite King books. I don’t think it’s very popular, though. It’s not horror, it’s super short, and pretty political - a recipe for complaints if there ever was one. Wordy Words on WordsI wrote up a huge review of this book because it brings up a lot of interesting ideas and questions regarding the value of souls, the transactional base of Christianity, the subjugation of a congregation at the hands of a power-hungry priesthood, and whether we as humans have been sold a twisted and warped tale of a deity for the sake of power and control rather than the potential truth of an all-knowing, all-seeing, and (most importantly) an all-loving god. But it was really long and religion is such a hot-button topic that I think it’s safer for everyone’s sanity to instead recommend you read the book (it’s not insanely long, though there are definitely parts to stop and ponder at) and see what your feelings are. I WILL say that in the 1990s parents petitioned school and public libraries to either remove or not stock Goosebumps books because of violence, death, and satanic imagery - none of which were in the series. When asked why they thought parents were petitioning, a librarian said they thought it was because parents were just reading the titles of books rather than the actual books. Wordy Words on WordsWhile on vacation - for funsies - Nietzsche decides to absolutely DRAG the established heroes of philosophy and, in the process, actually makes some really good points. It’s an interesting read, particularly if you like philosophy. I don’t think that loving philosophy is a requirement, though - anyone can enjoy this (short) book with very little previous knowledge of philosophical history. And hey! At the end of it, you can brag to your friends that you read Nietzsche while also broadening your perspective, opening your mind to new ideas, and finding out that drama exists in every field and in every era of human existence and history. Wordy Words on WordsA pretty quick ride, but there was a stutter in the beginning when two bodies are found and the innocent party doesn’t immediately call the cops. Why would you NOT call the cops if you found two bodies cut to pieces? In this story it’s justified by saying the person who found them needed to let her friend know her parents had been murdered before calling the cops. But then cops show up and she realizes that SHE’S going to be a suspect and that’s what makes the whole rest of the story happen. Wordy Words on WordsSo, I’ve read more than a couple Fear Street books now and this one? This one’s my favorite. I’m a sucker for imposter stories (probably from watching The Hand That Rocks the Cradle at too young of an age) and this story is definitely that. But it’s also FAST and exciting. Spooky and actually kinda logical - a huge ask for Stine. This was a true pleasure to read. Wordy Words on WordsI read Florida Roadkill and came away from it unsure of how I felt. It was funny at parts, not funny at others, entertaining here and there, and seemingly very random elsewhere. I came away neutral. So I figured I would read the next in the series and I think I developed an opinion: Tim Dorsey is fine, but not for me. His stories are a little too random and the jokes are funny but often overshadowed by his critiquing of Florida (fair critiquing, mind you) which reminded me too often about how I don’t really like Florida in the first place. It’s just not enjoyable enough to continue. If that sounds harsh, well, I don’t know what to say. Florida is integral to the plot of these books. And *I* have a lot of mixed feelings about Florida, having spent so much of my life there. It’s got some good to it, but there are too many snakes (literal and figurative), idiots, and assholes for me. I’m not saying there aren’t good people there but the bad ones shine so much it’s overwhelming. I will say that one part that stuck with me was when the protagonist thought about how when you were a kid you’d bring out your cool stuff and just… LOOK at it and how cool it was. Really brought me back to my trading card days when I would try to assemble all the clear cards from the Spider-Man set. One day! One day they’ll all be mine! Wordy Words on WordsI think I’ve reached the point where I’m beginning to look beyond Stine’s penchant for characters who don’t use much (if any) logic or rational thought. It’s best to just… give in and go with the flow. It makes the story way more enjoyable when I’m not getting hung up on why anyone would, I don’t know, start fires for funsies. For instance.
