déjà-vu beim Telefonat mit Freunden in den USA: „Lass uns auf einen sicheren Messenger wechseln, besser nicht hier“. Es geht um nix Geheimes, nur um die Sorgen, die sie sich machen wegen Trump, ihrer Jobs und der Zukunft ihres Landes.
Solche Gespräche gab‘s vor Jahren schon in Moskau. Mittlerweile redet in meinem Bekanntenkreis niemand mehr über Putin am Telefon

... Delta Chat hat aber nur eine eingeschränkte Empfehlung. Der Auszug aus der Matrix vom @kuketzblog umfasst nur die #Messenger, die eine uneingeschränkte Empfehlung erhalten haben. (Natürlich können eigene Kriterien ein etwas anderes Bild ergeben.)

I can report that #Conversations is also ok for the less advanced chatters (not for first-time Android users, though). I chat with less experienced friends regularly. Once it's installed, they'll get around fine.
@Datterich @leChris @musevg @eliasp @OhWeh @signalapp @threemaapp @inaruck agree. I used conversations many years ago for family internal messaging, which worked well.
Clients like conversations and monal use the xmpp protocol.
Xmpp works, but it was a mess, it is only usable with protocol extensions, like basic ones for e.g. offline messages. Federation with other servers was quite problematic. I would not recommend xmpp anymore.
Matrix looks much more promising

What you say WAS true about XMPP. In daily use, it doesn't matter if a feature is in the main protocol or an extension. There is a standard set, and federation works fine for me - for many years now.
It's all a matter of the use case. Therefore I doubt that Matrix is suitable for what @inaruck described. Meta data can be read on the server, according to https://www.kuketz-blog.de/die-grosse-messenger-uebersicht-kompakt-kritisch-direkt/
@Datterich @inaruck @leChris @musevg @eliasp @OhWeh true. I would have loved xmpp to be a broad success. Also google and Facebook had their servers open in the xmpp federation. Good times were those.
About meta data on the server, isn't that the case for almost all messenger protocols? I do not remember, does the xmpp OTR extension establish a direct connection? But still, establishing OTR requires relaying data via the server, right?
@0xba We're getting too much into technical detail - I therefore leave the others unmentioned.
OTR is not top-notch for XMPP. The clients have OMEMO implemented which is considered state-of-the-art, with PFS and so forth.
