What we in the open world are messing up in trying to compete with big tech - @bert_hubert's writings

Hi @bert_hubert,
thanks for this very important angle!

> So please obsess over the details of how people can quickly get started with your solution.

This resonates so much! If what you build is to be used, watch real people onboarding! And using, too, but that comes second. Do that over and over again. @nlnet may habe resources for that.

> Hardly anyone self-hosts software anymore, so you must PROMINENTLY offer things as-a-service

While I agree on self-hosting, I opt for self-operation - without permissions. Delivering agency via emancipatory, tools conflicts with a paternalist, convenience-focused as-a-service-only. Maybe offer both.

Bert Hubert's writings · What we in the open world are messing up in trying to compete with big tech - Bert Hubert's writingsOur societies and governments now largely run on American proprietary big-tech platforms. Many of us want to decrease this dependency, or even end it altogether. This article is part of a series of posts on (European) cloud challenges. Everyone in the open tech scene is full of good intentions and we all want to improve things, but mostly we are not succeeding. By our nature, we would like to build fun, open, federated, and standards-based things.

@mro @bert_hubert @nlnet That's what we did, we watched people onboarding WordPress ActivityPub and the Event Bridge. NLnet funded these observations and the improvements that came with it. It is so important. And yes, I need to continue to do so with my developments.
