Now whose genius idea was it to limit calendar event colors to precisely the named colors of CSS in RFC7986, which were never intended as a sole palette because CSS also supports hex colors?
(Explicitly *not* blaming the author here; this probably comes from legacy systems and was reviewed by any number of people that could have caught it.)
So, after spending the better part of the day working on this, I now have an #iCal file that contains _one_ event for Easter, which is using an RDATE property to list all of the Easter dates in about 200 years (because it's an irregular event and normal repeat rules won't work).
Thunderbird accepts this (even if it says "repeat details unknown"), #khal on the command line does, too.
@mailbox_org's #OpenXchange web UI doesn't display them.
"remind¹ syntax is way too complicated!"
lol, have you _read_ the iCalendar RFC?
As we consider ways to implement #ActivityPub into our FOSS Community Calendar Ecosystem platform Koalagator, I've been looking over the differing specs for how to specify the event object schema.
Have any other folk wrestled with this?Asking before I get arms deep in this stuff.
For those playing at home...

Schema.org - Event
Schema.org is a collaborative, community activity with a mission to create, maintain, and promote schemas for structured data on the Internet.
-----
W3C Activity Vocabulary - Event
This specification describes the Activity vocabulary. It is intended to be used in the context of the ActivityStreams 2.0 format and provides a foundational vocabulary for activity structures, and specific activity types.

Fediverse Enhancement Proposal
FEP-8a8e: A common approach to using the Event object type
ActivityStreams defines the Object Type Event. In real-world applications, the event object immediately showed the need for extension. Applications featuring Event objects have often chosen to add additional attributes and clarifications (i.e., interpretations) in order to implement their particular use case. This proposal clarifies and extends the ActivityPub standard to address the needs that have arisen in real-world implementations.

iCalendar Standard (RFC 5545)
iCalendar was first defined as a standard as RFC 2445 in 1998 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Today, iCalendar is used to import and synchronize events on various platforms, including smart phones, computer and web applications.

RSS?
#iCal #iCalAbo #Stundenplan #Digitalisierung
does anybody know of an open source set of calendars for national holidays etc that can be subscribed to by #ical or #caldav? I'd trust one with a git repo more than the random free calendar sites, I think
alternately if there's a truly known-good random free calendar site, I'm open to suggestions!
edit: main feature I want is to not have to remember to import a new calendar each year. boosts appreciated!
CW: This doesn't answer your question; it's just me blowing off steam.
Even publishing an .ics file seems to be rare these days.
I recently learned about jCal, the JSON format for iCalendar, so maybe there's still progress being made. But RFC7265 is already 10 years old!
And, of course, a new interchange format (jCal) requires that I re-tool all my previous software that expects iCal...
What is in .ics files? These calendar files can now be inspected with a new command line tool: ics-query
https://pypi.org/project/ics-query/
Due to the power of #OpenSource, this tool was easy to create and has a high quality and compatibility from the start. The calculation module python-recurring-ical-events is more than five years old and has seen many improvements and contributions since.
