oatmeal<p>Dr. Omri Shefer Raviv’s book, “The Homeowners: The Israeli Government and the Palestinians, 1967-1969”, researches the formative decisions that shaped Israel’s governance of the Palestinians in the immediate aftermath of the 1967 war—policies whose echoes resonate today while Israel is destroying Gaza and attempting, again, to empty it of its indigenous population (mostly descendants of the internal refugees of the 1948 <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Nakba" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nakba</span></a>). </p><p>Raviv argues that the initial assumption of a temporary occupation quickly fractured, with divergent views emerging within the Israeli government. While some envisioned annexation, others saw the territories as bargaining chips, and still others prioritized a strong military presence. However, a common thread was the desire for control. </p><p>Moshe Dayan, Minister of Defense, emerges as a central figure, actively dismissing any prospect of a political solution and advocating for the perpetuation of the occupation. As described in the book, Dayan prioritized a strategy of economic dependence to maintain control, declaring that it was the "most important success" and that "100,000 refugees have passed from Israel to Jordan.” The book details how policies were deliberately designed to create this reliance, hindering Palestinian development. </p><p>[...] "I wish they would all leave… I know the images and descriptions in the newspapers of people wading through water with their children… and in the heat of Jericho, those aren’t dignified scenes… but it’s the most practical thing happening today, with 1,000 refugees crossing every day.”</p><p>Raviv describes systematic efforts to encourage Palestinian emigration, including outright expulsion. Dayan reportedly expressed a desire to see Palestinians leave, stating that "it would be a pity if we had to deal with them," and that he hoped "they all pass”. These actions, coupled with the creation of conditions meant to incentivize migration, foreshadowed current strategies. </p><p>Hebrew <a href="https://www.haaretz.co.il/literature/study/2025-05-07/ty-article-review/.premium/00000196-a9ac-dce0-abfe-fffc57e30000" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">haaretz.co.il/literature/study</span><span class="invisible">/2025-05-07/ty-article-review/.premium/00000196-a9ac-dce0-abfe-fffc57e30000</span></a> or <a href="https://archive.ph/GbbQt" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">archive.ph/GbbQt</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Dr. Omri Shefer Raviv is a historian of the Israeli-Palestinian "conflict" and modern Israel."</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/palestine" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>palestine</span></a></span> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/israel" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>israel</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IsraelOccupation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IsraelOccupation</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WestBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WestBank</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Gaza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gaza</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Apatheid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Apatheid</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/EthnicCleansing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EthnicCleansing</span></a></p>

Israel is deliberately blocking humanitarian aid as collective punishment, causing starvation and the freezing deaths of babies in torn tents. </p><p>In the West Bank, almost 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7 through deliberate settler violence and military attacks. Nearly half of all Palestinian children killed in the West Bank over the past 20 years were killed just in the last year, including documented shootings of children as young as two years old. </p><p>The occupation forces are systematically destroying infrastructure, forcibly displacing 40,000 Palestinians, targeting medical facilities, and expanding illegal settlements. </p><p>[…] The playbook and justifications are eerily similar to those used in Gaza. Targeting militants becomes the explanation for a whole range of ruinous activities, including but not limited to: destroying infrastructure, driving people out of their homes with no right of return (40,000 so far, in less than two months, according to Unrwa, the UN aid agency), targeting medical facilities and personnel, flattening entire neighbourhoods and that most lethal policy, loosening military rules of engagement to allow soldiers more leeway and mandate to open fire. According to Unrwa, “the use of airstrikes, armoured bulldozers, controlled detonations, and advanced weaponry by the Israeli forces has become commonplace” in the West Bank, and is “a spillover of the war in Gaza”. The result is an assault in the West Bank that is as historic as it was and is in Gaza.</p><p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/mar/10/ceasefire-palestinians-gaza-israel-west-bank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/commentisfree/</span><span class="invisible">2025/mar/10/ceasefire-palestinians-gaza-israel-west-bank</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/palestine" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>palestine</span></a></span> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/israel" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>israel</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GazaGenocide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GazaGenocide</span></a> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/israelWarCrimes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>israelWarCrimes</span></a> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IsraelOccupation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IsraelOccupation</span></a> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SettlerViolence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SettlerViolence</span></a></p>
