Recuerden que hoy no se celebra el trabajo sino que se recuerda la huelga que dio derecho a 8 horas de trabajo y que todas las personas que recibimos un salario (o trabajamos por horas) somos trabajadores. El movimiento obrero, en crecimiento, exigía la jornada laboral de 8 horas como demanda principal.El 1 de mayo de 1886, miles de trabajadores en Chicago y otras ciudades estadounidenses iniciaron una huelga general para exigir la reducción de la jornada laboral. Chicago fue el epicentro de las protestas, con más de 80,000 trabajadores marchando pacíficamente.Los hechos de HaymarketEl 3 de mayo, la huelga en la fábrica McCormick terminó con la intervención violenta de la policía, dejando varios obreros muertos y heridos. Al día siguiente, el 4 de mayo, se convocó a una manifestación en la plaza Haymarket para protestar contra la represión policial.Durante la concentración, una persona desconocida lanzó una bomba contra la policía, matando a un agente e hiriendo a decenas. La policía respondió disparando indiscriminadamente contra la multitud, lo que resultó en más muertes y heridos, tanto entre manifestantes como policías.Consecuencias y legadoTras el atentado, varios líderes sindicales y anarquistas fueron arrestados y juzgados en un proceso considerado injusto. Ocho de ellos fueron condenados: cinco a muerte (cuatro ejecutados y uno suicidado en prisión) y tres a largas penas de cárcel.Estos mártires de Chicago se convirtieron en símbolo de la lucha obrera internacional.
