Bodo Menke<p>I am done with PIR. Radar is so much (!!) better!</p><p>After struggling with my Zigbee-based Passive Infrared sensors (PIR), I decided to move my 2 yrs proof of concept with radar-based presence detection into production. It is like a time-warp! <br>Monitoring a 60sqm area with only one (!) sensor and a precision of centimeters! It is a blast for adaptive lighting. Light follows movement! So much creativity. So much fun! 🤩 <br><a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PIR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PIR</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/Radar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Radar</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/mmWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mmWave</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/FMCW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FMCW</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/UWB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UWB</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PresenceDetection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PresenceDetection</span></a><br><a href="https://hessen.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a>… (1/4)</p>
Bodo Menke<p>Why did I decide to ditch traditional PIR movement detection and move to 60 GHz radar-based presence detection? Because battery-powered PIR are pain in the ass. I tried various zWave and Zigbee devices over a time-span of 10 yrs. They all suck - earlier or later. <br>Latest developments: <br><a href="https://community.home-assistant.io/t/ha-yellow-zha-philips-hue-motion-constantly-loosing-connection-unavailable/846234/1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">community.home-assistant.io/t/</span><span class="invisible">ha-yellow-zha-philips-hue-motion-constantly-loosing-connection-unavailable/846234/1</span></a><br><a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PIR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PIR</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/Zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/ZHA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZHA</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PhilipsHUE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PhilipsHUE</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/Hue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hue</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/zWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zWave</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/Fibaro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fibaro</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/Radar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Radar</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/mmWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mmWave</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/FMCW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FMCW</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/UWB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UWB</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PresenceDetection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PresenceDetection</span></a><br><a href="https://hessen.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a>… (3/4)</p>
Bodo Menke<p>Interested in radar and what it can do for you? Here is a nice overview from an automotive perspective on what FMCW can do vs UWB. <br>FYI: UWB, used in iPhone since a while for precision finding, is a similar technology, but with a lower frequency. <br><a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PIR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PIR</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/Radar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Radar</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/mmWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mmWave</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/FMCW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FMCW</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/UWB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UWB</span></a> <a href="https://hessen.social/tags/PresenceDetection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PresenceDetection</span></a><br><a href="https://hessen.social/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a><br><a href="https://www.novelic.com/blog/60-ghz-fmcw-radar-vs-uwb-for-in-cabin-monitoring/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">novelic.com/blog/60-ghz-fmcw-r</span><span class="invisible">adar-vs-uwb-for-in-cabin-monitoring/</span></a> (2/4)</p>
