I love my #privacy bubble on Mastodon but it does get a bit tiring to see the oft-repeated notion that all #data collection is equally unethical. For individuals and small organizations in particular it is important to know about their audience. A world with zero #user #tracking would not at all lead to less consolidation in markets or digital visibility. Even more importantly: Even with all the privacy law that we have (and what we still need), there is still plenty of scope for helpful #analytics.
@MaxGuthier It should be #optin. And it should be explained in a very understandable way: "This is what is collected. This is not collected. And this is what we use it for". Not in legaleese words which could implicate anything, but in simple ones. Then it's fine. I like how #debian does it.
But #optout or not even choosable are a nogo.
@n0r Opt-in and explained is mandatory now. Making things easily understandable and choosable... that is where things are severely lacking way too often.
