Lots of European hosters/cloud companies tell us to "just use their cloud!". But the cloud companies here can't be compared to Google/AWS/Azure. Our local places are selling wood. Yet cloud customers want furniture. And until we are honest about that gap, things won't improve:

@bert_hubert yes, every article in Germany commented with „ha for that money I get 10x the CPU/mem at Hetzner“. But it’s the managed services which made me love building on #AWS after having worried too much about failing hard drives.
Long way to go for new providers to climb up the stack, #kubernetes is only a foundation, far from the solution.
@StGebert @bert_hubert not to mention the redundancy you have for those services according to your availability zone.
Anybody can host a virtual server (well enough) but few can provide managed services at a fraction of the cost of ownership.
@StGebert @bert_hubert Kubernetes can in fact be used for many cloud native applications in lieu of the proprietary primary cloud providers’ compute services. It takes a bit of planning but decoupling from these expensive proprietary services leads to a path where you have actual competition for your application hosting money.
