Building a #Sustainable home in the #Australian #Outback

May 25, 2025

"In 2024 Anika Molesworth and her partner set out to build a family home in a remote part of New South Wales. They were looking to create, in Anika’s words, 'something comfortable, a beautiful space that complemented the land, and a house that doesn’t cost the planet.' That was the mission. But after speaking with various builders, both local and from afar, and getting ideas on new house builds (mainly kit-home/modular type things) they all just felt wrong. The ideas they were presenting and the materials they would be using, went against the whole idea of sustainability.

"Faced with these new-build issues, Anika’s attention turned to an abandoned homestead on her family’s property. 'It was very humble. Like seriously humble. Tiny windows, small dark rooms, not an ounce of insulation. Never connected to any services. It was going to be a big task making it comfortable.' But Anika could see the potential.

"A few local builders were invited over to have a look and give their ideas. The first one said 'better to build a new home using refrigerator panels.' Which he happened to sell, dismissing the renovation concept as a waste of time and money. Time and again Anika bumped up with people who just could not see the vision and had no idea what she was talking about with ‘recycling, reclaiming and using natural materials’. Local suppliers – from electricians to plumbing – just tried to sell her the same cheap, imported products. When Anika spoke to a local plumbing supplier about composting toilets she was simply met with eye rolling."

Our Wonderful Green Future · Building a Sustainable home in the Australian Outback
More from Our Wonderful Green Future

Let me see. #Subdivision residents have had a problem with folks cutting through their property? Why not create a semi-public thoroughfare that has lighting along the paths? If that's the only argument against creating new housing, I think that's pretty lame... Especially when the "problem" already exists! Solve the problem, and help provide housing!!!

#Indiana - Developer to turn empty office into apartments

JORDAN FOUTS, August 22, 2025

GOSHEN — "An office building across from Fidler Pond Park could become an apartment building under plans heard Tuesday.

"The Goshen Plan Commission voted to rezone property at 1423 Lincolnway East to allow the former Commodore Homes office to be transformed into an apartment building. The proposal includes 24 studio and one-bedroom units in a two-story building.

"The board’s recommendation that the property be rezoned from commercial to residential will be taken up next by Goshen Common Council. Board member Doug Nisley voted against the rezoning after several [subdivision] residents voiced fears of seeing extra foot traffic come through their own property."

[...]

"“What has been happening, even when just Commodore was there, is people cross over through private property to get to our streets so that they can take walks [to the nearby park] or go to the grocery store or do whatever." [THE NIMBY HORROR OF THAT!!!]

A Corporate Solution To The #HousingCrisis That Will Help Cities Thrive

By Dean Kaplan,
Aug 21, 2025

Excerpt: "Reshaping vacant office space into new apartments could create around 1.25 million new homes across 91 U.S. cities, study analysts found. Over 70,000 conversions may happen in 2025 alone as architects, builders and developers take advantage of #AdaptiveReuse incentives in cities from #Boston to #SanFrancisco."

Musikabteilung Zentralbibliothek Zürich im Predigerchor.

The 14th century Predigerkirche was the main chapel of a Dominican convent. It was converted to secular use during the Reformation and used as a granary until 1873, when it became the cantonal library. In 1917, most of the collections moved to the Zentralbibliothek nearby but the music collection remained in the choir.

Bibliotheek Oog in Al, Utrecht, the Netherlands

The Cereolfabriek was a linseed and soy oil factory that was in function from 1905 to 2002 near Utrecht. The handsome brick building was designed by architect Gerardus Antonius Ebbers, known for his work on churches and mansions in the area. The complex now houses the Oog in Al branch of the Utrecht library as well as other community services.

Bibliothèque Éva-Circé-Côté, Montréal, Canada

The former St-Gabriel fire station was designed by Joseph A. Mercier and built in 1891-92. Following the merger with the city of Montreal, it was decommissioned and converted into a library in 1976. At the occasion of its recent renovation, the library was renamed after journalist, author and Montreal's first professional librarian Éva Circé-Côté.

The university of Salzburg is spread over multiple locations across the city, including large portions of the Prince-Archbishops palace in the city centre. The map frescoes adorning this room come from the 16th century Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and were rediscovered in 1986.

Bibliothèque publique et scolaire d'Orbe, Switzerland

The public library in the town of Orbe is located inside a former prison. The 14th century building was first a hospital before being converted into the town jail in 1835. The cells remained in function until 1960. The library now shares the building with a small theatre, although there are plans to build a modern library to replace it.

Touching down lightly here to say, Happy New Year! I cannot believe it has been so long since I posted here. Though I post often on IG, a habit I suppose, I am not so often on here. I love this platform but it stopped working on my phone, that is probably why. How is everyone?!

In my catching up mode, here are three good things...

1. My #HouseReno is coming along beautifully and the #RetainingWall I was so worried about is being reconstructed today. Though it was supposed to all be done by the middle of last August, a combination of delays, weather and adding more items to the scope, have extended the schedule. It's OK. I love it.
2. I'm well into my doctorate in business admin program (focus on #OrganizationalLeadership) and really enjoying it. For the most of each of the days and weeks leading up to an assignment being due, I feel like I'm grappling with concepts (I don't have an MBA; this is a #DBA). Then, in the hours before, during and after submitting an assignment, I think, "wow, that wasn't hard at all." I am learning!
3. Work is fascinating, daily, and I feel so fortunate to be connected to bright, solutions-focused people working in architecture and engineering. My projects are now spanning two countries and involving more #CarbonModeling and #Sustainability oversight. I do a lot of quality control reviews of #HistoricRestoration / #AdaptiveReuse sustainability-related projects. It is emerging.

The regeneration of three blocks of apartments built in the 1960s will increase the number of homes by 40% without demolishing any of the existing flats.

This is sustainable residential development at its best. Credit to Grafton Architects and Dublin City Council for this initiative

Please boost this question to reach academic and industry connections here working in climate resilience (and TIA)!

I’m interested in pursuing doctoral level research related to my work in architecture and climate. I have two clear paths open right now: DBA (Doctor of Business Admin) and PhD. Either could be part time and online while I am working full time as an architect (see #DayJob) and my goal would be to stay on the industry side, not to go into teaching full time, although I am interested in some teaching and research. Do you know anyone who is doing climate resilience research and work in architecture and planning who ties the for-profit business / non-profit / IGO/ NGO admin aspects in? I would love to connect and I have a million questions! Thank you.
