The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (#BOEM) has canceled the second #offshorewind lease sale in the #GulfOfMexico due to “a lack of competitive interest.”

BOEM received 25 comments in response to the March #2024 Proposed Sale Notice, but only one company expressed interest in participating. #SunriseWind, #NewYork’s largest offshore #windfarm, now has the final permit it needs from the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (#BOEM) to start construction.
The 924-megawatt (MW) Sunrise Wind, a 50-50 partnership between Ørsted and Eversource, will generate enough clean energy to power nearly 600,000 New York households. It’s around 30 miles east of #MontaukPoint, #LongIsland, and is expected to be operational in 2026.

The two areas total approximately 195,012 acres and they avoid 98 per cent of the areas recommended for exclusion due to their importance as commercial fishing grounds, BOEM said."

Under Interior Department’s approval, as many as 98 #windturbines and three #offshorewind substations could be installed about 13nm southeast of #AtlanticCity, with power cables coming ashore in #OceanCounty and #CapeMay County. According to the #BOEM, the project is estimated to have a generating capacity of 1.1GW, capable of powering more than 380,000 homes over the opposition of some local residents.
