Part 2/4
But seeing parts of the physics community (including some others, too) running completely out of control was like returning to planet earth from a long term space mission. There seems to be a #PhysicsFightClub with unpleasant rules, playbook and agenda. And there are people involved who proudly promote their affiliation with well known universities and research facilities as e.g. #Cambridge or #CERN.

The Cambridge #Python User Group seems to be dead... is there any current equivalent in the #Cambridge (UK) area?

I am aware of the #Django social group, not sure I dare step near that at the moment as I'll probably just end up trolling them. 😂 (Though IMO my current main Django problem has "using it wrong" at the root of things.)

@jeremycshipp Ah! That reminds me of punting on the Cam in the 1970s.

#Cambridge students in punts. Absolutely stereotypical American tourists on the bridges taking pictures of them. Y'know, weird shorts, checked shirts, mostly quite fat, talking in loud voices, calling out things like "Gee Homer, that's a real live Cambridge student", necks festooned with loads of expensive looking, but actually rather crap, camera gear.

Students in punts: point cameras back at American tourists. *Much* more sophisticated cameras than the tourists have. Calling out to each other in loud voices in fake American accents "Gee Homer, is that a real live American tourist?"

(Those days have gone. They were followed by a generation of Japanese tourists, and I think it's mostly Chinese now.)

@Helsravn We're trying to work out how to get to former Yugoslavia from #Cambridge. The first bit - drive to Düsseldorf - turns out to be only twenty miles further than our regular trip to Cornwall. Then there's an overnight car train to Villach, one of the tiny number of remaining car trains. Then it's "only" another seven hour drive.

“There’s a common misconception that state-of-the-art technology has to be expensive, energy consumptive and hard to engineer. That’s because we have been persuaded to believe that #InnovativeTechnology is whatever bombastic billionaires claim it is, whether that’s commercial #spacecraft or the endless iterations of generative #AItools.

As the #Canadian #technologist and #engineer #UrsulaFranklin once said, fantasies of technology would have it that innovation is always “investment-driven, shiny, lab-born, experimental, exciting”. But more often than not, in the real world, it is “#NeedsDriven, #scrappy, on #location, #iterative, #practical, #mundane”.

The real pioneering #technologies of today are genuinely useful #systems I like to call “frugal tech”, and they are brought to life not by eccentric billionaires but by people doing more with less. They don’t impose #TopDown#solutions” that seem to complicate our lives while making a few people very rich. It turns out that genuinely #innovative #technology really can set people free.” — Eleanor Drage

Further to being on the radio, work is now also on the tele! BBC Look East - circa 3 mins in: bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002

Also BBC online: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy4y9x

And even the Guardian: theguardian.com/society/2025/j

This is all off the back of a very successfull trial with Cambs NHS with distinctly positive feedback and outcomes!

As I previously mentioned we're hiring software developers, physiotherapists, and other roles on-site in the #Cambridge (UK) area: careers.flok.health/

The software work is mainly #Python centred on a core of #Django, with some front-end using #SolidJS/#React and similar, plus the ususal sorts of tools and infrastructure. There's even a bit of Rust lurking off to one side (but not often touched at the moment.)

Right, I'll really take the corporate-shill hat off for a while now (but really, it's an interesting and pleastant start-up to work for! 🤠 And no, no LLMs/GenAI! Think more oldskool: "expert systems"!)

BBC iPlayerLook East - Lunchtime News: 31/07/2025The latest news, sport and weather for the East of England.

Hm, why's the phone ringing so much...

Ah, right, unexpected item in the BBC Radio 4 area (expected in general, just not at 09:45 this morning when everyone but developers is in meetings, lol...)

This is about where I work, starting circa 15:35: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002gfwj

As is made clear in the story the tech is not "GenAI" - no LLMs hallucinating treatment. The mission is to really help people - and do it faster, reduce the terrible waiting lists starting with one of the biggest problems: lower back pain. (All via the NHS, with various rollouts coming up.)

Anyway, we've some huge workloads ahead and are hiring both physios and software developers (dev/data/testing) in the #Cambridge area (not remote, 4 days in-office, work from home Wednesdays): careers.flok.health/

Righty... a rare "work" post from me. Usual garbage will resume in due course.

BBCInside Health - Exosomes: Is cosmetics' biggest trend a health risk? - BBC SoundsJames finds out why there are fears over new skincare products, plus physio goes digital.
