However, <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/immigration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#immigration</a> is just the cover story; it's a justification. We should not be fooled into spreading the narrative that ICE is an immigration enforcement agency. It's a Keep This Country White agency. When we say “immigrants” when we mean “Latinos” (or <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LatinX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LatinX</a>, <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Latine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Latine</a>) we are playing their game.

Sure, some came up to three centuries ago, but still. And many European immigrants (whose right to live in the US is by and large not disputed) haven't been in the country all that long either, so it would be dishonest to use <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/immigrant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#immigrant</a> as a legitimate term to distinguish between "real" Americans and <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Latinos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Latinos</a>.

Doing so lends credibility to the narrative that this is an immigration issue. When in fact, it's a targeting of an identity, not a status. But that's exactly what we're doing in our discourse and news coverage. I call this "the nondescript oppressed identity problem."
