Wife informs me most schools don't start anywhere until this week. So what's the causal factor on this (now-annual end-of-summer) spike? Hot weather? And so everyone hotboxes inside with AC on recirc?

Hello you knowledgeable beings of the fediverse.
I have a heat recovery unit waiting to go in while I seal up my house, but it's becoming increasingly obvious now that where I live in about 10 years time the climate will necessitate some kind of cooling as well, so as I've not purchased the originally planned air to water heat pump, what would be my options?

Location is the South West bit of Ireland

Before you buy an air cooling unit for your flat. Read this article, if you maybe want to save a buck:
"Unlike air conditioning, fans can produce different thermal environments in a single space."
"Studies also show that circulating fans can significantly improve people’s perceived air quality, .."
" Like AC, fans offer a solution in regions plagued by flying insects, because these have trouble flying in the turbulent airflow of fans. "

LOW←TECH MAGAZINE · The Revenge of the Circulating FanCooling people by increasing local airflow is at least ten times more energy efficient than refrigerating the air in a given space.

@rogerparkinson I am so sorry about your family. It's more than just disappointing; it's dangerous and thoughtless to ignore public health advisories out of vanity. So many people have suffered from this disease's contagions and mutations which people are augmenting. Here in WA state, there is a dramatic shortage of medical support throughout all systems because of the same behaviors you describe.

It's time to start digging in to my mask project!

I need good, solid resources to back up a presentation I'll be giving to the local public. What are the most reliable and ethical doctors, journalists, advocates, research, statistics, or sites that you've seen?

I'll be talking about air quality, advocating environmental justice through citizen science and mutual aid, and my focus is going to be ventilation and masking.

The program is organized by a local group of folks that started putting up air sensors all over town because of toxic chemical leaks from nearby refineries. They got a grant through a university, and they may be able to help me out in getting an air quality sensor so I can test the CO2 in local buildings. I'd also like to be able to pass out some mask samples. I've been trying to find info on other things like sip valves, elastomeric respirator exhaust valve filter adapters, good sites to buy masks and so on.

Since these issues got politicized and the CDC and WHO are increasingly corrupt/hamstrung, finding good info is a fuckin MESS. I could really use some help!

What's been very interesting to me is, the folks who promote masking are usually ALSO right on other issues. Masks are required at the local anarchist book fairs, for example, which to me says a LOT. The people I follow here on Mastodon who are solidly against genocide, fascism, capitalism, and lesser evilism are the SAME people who are solidly for issues like universal healthcare, right to repair, accessibility, direct action, labor organizing, etc etc-- you have a moral consistency that inspires my respect and hope, and I want to learn more from you!

Next post below will be where I list the sources I've collected, updating as I go.

Indoor air quality and ventilation folks… I need some help!

I’ve been dealing with terrible VOCs in my apartment that are making me sick. I’ve been trouble shooting for months but can’t figure out where they’re coming from.

My building has four MAUs (make up air units) on the roof that are supposed to pressurize the hallways and supply fresh air from the roof. They needed replacing, and when they were turned off the vocs in my unit dropped considerably.

Best as I can tell the pressurization must be causing excessive air leakage from someone else’s unit into mine.

I have to constantly keep a window open in order to run any exhaust fans, and they’re still high.

Here’s my latest dilemma. I’m in a tiny condo with just a living room and bedroom. Living room has a sliding door to a balcony and bedroom has a window.

I want to put a portable air conditioner in the bedroom as it runs ridiculously hot, but that will mean sealing off the window.

The portable unit comes with a hose to vent the unit out the window … so does that mean it will constantly ventilate as long as the unit is “on”?

If that’s the case it might actually help the VOCs, but I’m unsure if I’m understanding correctly.

I assume if the unit is “off” it would provide less fresh air than an open window, but appreciate any advice!

there's nothing more satisfying than a tool building itself 💖
i'm soldering the final version of the fan controller circuitry ✨

the wiring isn't perfect because i dont have good wires to do the job, only PVC coated flimsy 24 AWG, good enough for the amperage but not good enough for a good looking board instead only a mild fire hazard 😔

If y'all want me to go into detail I Will 😊
