I’m trying to use #Yelp in #brighton to find #vegetarian lunch. So I search “vegetarian food.” Their algorithm is stupid. Rather than find me _vegetarian restaurants_ they find me restaurants where someone in the review uses the word “vegetarian”. So this includes restaurants like “I was surprised my girlfriend could find something here, because she is vegetarian.” And a restaurant that _specialises in meat_ named “Meat Liquor” that has a review that says “I started going here after they started serving vegetarian items.”

These were search results ONE and TWO. They have no business being the top results. They are reasonable to include somewhere at the cottons of the list.

Now, if you know anything about Brighton, it has an ABSOLUTELY HUGE vegetarian and vegan scene. There’s simply no excuse to put these results near the top. I have my suspicions why the results are so bad. The word begins with A and ends with I.

@liaizon I only ever review restaurants in #HappyCow.

It's proprietary and not exactly not-for-profit but this is a difficult space so I accept imperfection. Restaurant reviews require opinionated moderation; otherwise, profit rules.

I nevertheless wish well to #Yelp in its antitrust struggle using the #DMA.

DDG, OsmAnd etc. ought to be able to license reviews at reasonable fees. (If I had many reviews I'd try to export them to lib.reviews.)

#McDonald’s where #Trump served fries hit with flurry [#McFlurry?] of negative #Yelp reviews
Yelp disabled comments on the Pennsylvania McDonald’s after a string of politicized reviews. “Stunned to see a convicted felon operating the drive through,” one said.

Longtime Google rivals like Yelp and DuckDuckGo received a huge victory Monday when a U.S. federal judge ruled that Google is an illegal monopoly. The judge has yet to decide how to restore competition, and Google’s competitors are pushing for changes they believe will help their businesses. Which might be harder than it sounds. "It is a culture that professes to value populist truth, the democracy of everyone’s voice getting equal weight. But even within Yelp’s pages, that’s never actually been true."
