I like using the term #fediverse. But if we're switching to something like "social web", it should be the #OpenSocialWeb. Otherwise we're just not distinguishing ourselves at all. #OSW
No offence to proponents of the Fediverse, but when I tell regular people about it, the name is a bit of a turn off. I'm sorry, it just is. It's not something to be upset about. It's just... people. So I have been trying to think of other words or terms and I think I have landed on the one I like best.
The Fediverse = The Open Social Web.
OSW for short.
Open Social Web
I'm using it... you're welcome to as well. :)
I want everyone on the #OpenSocialWeb and participating so that the public can collectively decide what art, information and ideas go viral. Not big media owners and advertisers. Managing our attention is really important and this decentralized medium is the best way ever devised to do that well, especially if we can all learn to be better critical thinkers and more responsible. All the other stuff here is nice, but that's what makes it unique and culturally important. #osw #fediverse
Is the internet decentralized or federated? Whatever it is, this place is too, right? Does it matter? #OpenSocialWeb #osw #OpenWeb #fediverse
The internet is full of shit, but that's ok cause you generally don't see it unless you look for it. Email spam is one of those exceptions, being similar to trolls here on the #OpenSocialWeb. So moderation should take a similar approach on this decentralized network, accepting that crap will exist but we should focus on keeping it from annoying people. And just like how Gmail can blacklist email domains unfairly, servers here should be cautious and nuanced in their blocking too. #osw #fediverse
We built the #openweb together. We didn't complain and wait till it was perfect. For the business model to be figured out. Open protocols and the most basic tools made our imaginations run wild. People shared visions of what it could be. They were excited to put up the most basic text and images and designs. Weird was cool cause most importantly, it was DIY. What happened to that early 90s spirit? That should be the #OpenSocialWeb today. #fediverse #osw
We are in the early 90s of the #OpenSocialWeb. AOL was very popular and the net was clunky and sparsely populated back then. We all had to help build it together. But imagine having separate internets. One open, others controlled by billionaires or corporations. That's the ridiculousness of #Twitter, and #Notes and all the other closed platforms that came before it. And #NPR is going with Instagram? Like we haven't learned anything, or maybe the money and PR made people forget. #fediverse #osw
The #OpenSocialWeb needs a decentralized donation service. It could start as just a way to support your server admin/host, and then evolve to automatically split some preset amount at the end of the month to the content you marked with a "$". #fediverse #osw
Maybe we should call it the #OpenSocialWeb instead of the #fediverse. It's the 90s again. Nobody knew where the WWW was going either, but there were open protocols to build around. Having a site allowed independence from AOL etc. True freedom of expression. An #OSW server means freedom of reach. It connected you to a larger network, but few people were using the #openweb then either. A chicken or the egg issue. Everybody had to hold hands and jump together for it to work. That's true again.
