"THE GOVERNMENT'S disclosure process succeeded in its main purpose: keeping the government together", summed up Helsingin Sanomat, summing up political journalism's nihilistic view of the summer debate on racism as a social problem.

According to Ilta-Sanomat, the communication to the Parliament can be interpreted as a "reputation management gesture to calm the uproar", which, according to the newspaper, does not eradicate racism. In Iltalehti, the communiqué was seen as a "topping up" of the furore, which it hoped would end the "SPP’s scarring of the government" and the BF's "racism flirtation".

POLITICS is, at its core, a battle of values. However, the summer has shown that it is precisely talking about values that is particularly difficult in Finland.

Politicians do proclaim values - at least when called upon to do so - but as soon as they have to explain them in more detail, there is silence, they dig out a law book or talk vaguely about 'these things'.

This may seem paradoxical at a time when the value dialogue is stronger than ever. US political scientist Professor Wendy Brown has a diagnosis for this phenomenon: the dilemma of nihilism. In Nihilistic Times (2023), Brown writes that nihilism is not about the absence of values but about the trivialisation and instrumentalisation of values.

As a result, values lose value.

POLITICAL journalism, therefore, likes to follow politics as if it were a sport: power struggles, personal elections and zero-sum games of budgetary politics. From this perspective, debates about values are more a distraction from the real politics.

When Yle reported that "according to sources, the SPP and the Finns Party had a difference of opinion until the very end on definitions of hate speech and racism", as a citizen we can expect politicians to be able and willing to publicly open up and justify their views, to explain what they are trying to achieve and why they disagree.

The fact that the government's communication looks like the end of a values struggle, or that the SPP spins the communication as a historic achievement, does not support democracy, it erodes it. It feeds a nihilistic view of politics as a narcissistic and irresponsible game in which values are merely instruments of power.

Although scientific racism in the 19th century is a fact, and racism was cultivated in the international scientific community and also within Finland, Stadius says that the racist word used by Keskisarjan is almost absent in the history of Finns.

"The Finnish race was mainly associated with the Mongols."

The term used by Keskisarjan is originally from a phrase by the French philosopher Joseph Arthur de Gobineau, a firm believer in the theory of the Aryan lord race.

In an interview with Iltalehti, Keskisarja said that the term is "a familiar phrase to history buffs".

In his speech, MP Keskisarja (BF) recounted the history of racism in Finland through Impivaara. According to the Dictionary of the Language Office, impivaara means "'the national isolation of Finns'".

"It is quite true that the Finnish-speaking people had very little social and political influence in the Grand Duchy," says Stadius.

However, the early days of Finnish autonomy also included, among other things, Fennomania, which strongly advocated the rights of the people. This was also mentioned by Keskisarja in his speech.

"When Keskisarja talks about Impivaara and jumps to the present day, he misses a big slice of Finnish history. Impivaara will develop when Finland becomes independent. In the 1920s Finland is European, modernising, part of the West and a very white country."

Not a neutral word.

In his speech, the centre row claimed that Impivaara was not able to racially segregate anyone.

According to Stadius, research shows that this is not true. In Finland, minorities such as the Roma and the Sami were oppressed. For example, it was written about Finnish citizens, the Sámi, that they had no choice but to die out.

Stadius points out that concepts live and society must live with them. Language also reflects society's values and the n-word is not neutral today.

Keskisarja said in his speech that "Finland is the safest country in the world for minorities".

"If that's the case, the Central Series could start by stopping using the n-word. How does a non-white Finnish citizen feel about this word?"

Here’s how the parliament voted.

Fucking disgrace. Only The Green League, SDP and Left Alliance united against racism and fascism. Only MPs who’re not white (3) sit there.

BF nazis, NCP, CD, SPP and Movement now voted yes to fascism, racism and violence.

The Centre Party voted “empty” bc they felt that the piece of shit “equality paper” was so fantastic.

Changes to the temporary protection of third-country nationals fleeing Ukraine.

At its meeting on 7 September, the Government decided that Finland will stop granting temporary protection and new residence permits to third-country nationals who have fled from Ukraine but have not been granted international protection in Ukraine or do not have a permanent residence permit issued by the Government. The decision does not affect the protection already granted or the validity of the residence permits issued.

Today in Parliament, the debate was about racism. The governing parties reiterated how wonderful and historic it is that the equality statement has been issued.

But the communication has been given to Parliament because of the racist writings of ministers. That is a sad fact. Equally sad is the fact that one after the other, the chairmen of the governing parties have stressed how difficult and hard it has been to draft this communication. That is, the commitment to equality, equity and non-discrimination.

The old writings of Ministers Purra and Rydman are blatantly racist. The least that can be expected from such would be an unequivocal resignation and apology. Even that we have not received. Even today, many Finns downplayed the significance of the communication, saying that it does not change anything.

Even more worrying, I find the government's blindness to the problems of its own programme. Prime Minister Orpo also said today that the government also wants to tackle "structural discrimination".

However, structural discrimination is often a more complex and challenging issue than the racist messages of ministers. According to the constitution, groups of people cannot be placed in an unequal position by law without a valid reason. Yet structural discrimination exists in our society, as the Prime Minister himself said. Addressing that requires an understanding of what measures and decisions reinforce structural discrimination.

Unfortunately, the government programme contains numerous examples of such measures. The government is making it more difficult for those who have settled and lived here for a long time to obtain citizenship. In various ways, the government is tightening up the conditions for residence permits. It is obliging employers to inform the immigration authorities when a person's employment ends, so that they can be removed from the country if a new job has not been found within three months. The government is raising tuition fees for students from outside the EU and EEA countries.

The government plans to further reduce the reception allowance, even though we already have Ukrainian refugees standing in food lines. If the constitution gives way, the government plans to separate social security for immigrants from others. In addition, they want to continue to pay lower unemployment benefits to those with poor language skills.

These are just a few concrete examples of the many provisions in the government's programme that, if implemented, will make Finland a worse place for those who move here from elsewhere. They will increase discrimination, not reduce it.

None of the measures in the Communication counterbalance these deteriorations. Therefore, the clearest way for the government to show that it was serious about promoting non-discrimination and equality would have been to show a willingness to change the government programme. However, the government did not show that much will.

Staying in government, in turn, erodes the values, reputation and identity of the party as a whole. While Anna-Maja Henriksson proclaims her absolute rejection of racism, True Finns politicians riot with messages questioning human dignity on social media.

An Oulu city councillor (BF) manages to troll herself into the national public eye with the following Facebook update (19.8.). The update contains familiar elements: racism, hatred and aggression: "It's nice to see ******* running (smiley face)." In interviews, the councillor pulls the wool over the eyes of the news media.

The basic thrust of the post can be summed up as follows: we don't give a damn whether someone is concerned about racism. We do as we please.

There are probably two directions Henriksson can look in when considering the solution.

The first of these is the forthcoming and hastily prepared "racism communication" by the government. Its primary aim is not to protect human dignity but to save the government of Petteri Orpo. Only a truly naive political observer could believe anything else. The wording of the compromise paper is being made in such a way that the SPP can use it to stay in government.

The second possible direction is the actual actions and double communication of the Basic Finns. As is well known, the party is constantly trying to undermine the debate on racism and produce new openings that question human dignity. These racist acts will continue even if the SPP remains in government.

Like the Oulu municipal politician, other party activists will use social media to give the middle finger to SPP supporters who respect human dignity and oppose racism. When this communication inevitably spills over into the news media from time to time, Henriksson's credibility and, above all, his dignity will erode at an accelerating rate.

Henriksson's situation is not easy. Perhaps the choice can be made easier by considering a basic question that is important in life in general: what is real, what is wishful thinking and what is illusion?

Yle also calculated from data provided by Statistics Finland that racist Basic Finns (true finns is what they’d like to be called ) has most support in regions with least immigrants.

So the moral and racist panics around the subject is just smoke and mirrors incited and taken advantage of and driven by fears and prejudice.

This means that more diverse municipalities generally had less support for the Finns Party. HS calculated the correlation between the municipaly's support for the Finns in the Parliamentary elections earlier this year and the share of foreign-born residents in the municipality.

I am happy too that finally the discussion about racism is taken seriously on the mainstream media. For too long it has been mostly on the shoulders of those experiencing and living through it daily, and partly on small % of white antifacist and antiracist activists.

Not so happy about the fact that it took literal fucking nazies in the government before we got here, and some are still clinging on to the “they’re not really, really fascists” imagination even in critic outputs. #racismInFinland
